2013-4 Season - Chapter 13 - Video Rewind - MV 59 - Northwood 20 Game Story

Friday January 31, 2013 - at Northwood

MV's second game of the week was not its toughest test of the year. The Hawks played their starters for only 12 of 32 minutes on the evening and rolled to a 26-4 lead at the end of the first.  Every Hawk saw significant action on the evening, with 11 players scoring.  The game was televised on BCSN.

MV was a strong 11-13 from the line on the evening.

Make sure you scroll down for Zain Bedi's shot of the night.

Again it should be noted that Northwood is rebuilding under an new coach and all but one player on their varsity roster is a freshman or sophomore.  Better times are ahead for the Rangers.

Game scoring

MV   26   15   14    4  -   59

NW    4     4     3    9  -    20

The summary for this evening will consist of video highlights and scoring only.  There was that little drama on the evening.

Rashad Woodley shows his skills at both ends of the court, pivoting in for two then swatting a Ranger try into the hinterlands.

The Hawks pass it over, around and through the zone, but it's Nick Towns who scores on the offensive rebound.

Truth Foreman drains a three from the right wing.

Zain Bedi bounces a beautiful hi-lo post pass to Nick Towns for two.

End of the first half - again passing over the zone and its Solomon Collins with a short range jumper from the baseline to put the Hawks up 55-11.

Don't blink, or you'll miss Thad Woodard finishing the fast break.

2013-4 Season Chapter Twelve - King Solomon's Points Maumee Valley 60 - Cardinal Stritch 43 Game Story

Wednesday January 29, 2014 at the Varsity Gym

Coach Josh Arthur had a full 12 days to prepare his Hawks for round two with Cardinal Stritch owing to a seemingly unending blast of winter cold and snow in mid-January 2014.  Maumee Valley was coming off an unprecedented five weather cancellations in the prior six school days.  Fortunately for the Hawks, the only games scheduled in the dozen snow days were contests against Gibsonburg and CS - which was delayed only one day from January 28.  This set up an unusual Wednesday contest for the Varsity Boys team.

Given this long stretch, Coach Arthur had plenty of time to prepare for their TAAC opponent, and made the most of it.  With careful study, the Hawks found some holes in their opponents' defensive strategy and fully exploited them in the middle section of the game.

The beneficiary of this research was athletic Senior forward Solomon Collins, who at least on this night, deservedly earned the title King Solomon with a career high 20 points on the evening.

Starters - Marcus Knabbs ('14), Lucas Isaza ('15), Thad Woodard ('14), Nick Towns ('15), Rashad Woodley ('14)

First Quarter - CS 9 - MV 6

The Cardinals spent much of the evening switching between man and a 1-2-2-zone, which kind of morphed out to a 3-2 at times.  MV, to no one's surprise played a pressing man-to-man scheme all evening.  The focus of the Hawks defense was the TAAC's leading scorer, Austin Adams.

Both teams opened the game like they had missed five of the previous six school days, and it wasn't until the fifth possession that Adams caused Roger Spurgeon to move the scoreboard off zeros near the 6:00 mark.  Lucas Isaza converted one of two free throws, but the teams continued to sputter along, trading field goals.  Of concern to the visitors, Adams and Brooks Gasser each picked up two early fouls and with 2:26 left in the first, both players took a seat on the bench.  A late free throw and down-the-stretch basket by the visitors upped their lead to three at the end of the first.

Second Quarter - MV 12 - CS 4

The Cardinals opened with a hoop, but their bad luck with fouls continued.  Two more Cardinal starters picked up two more fouls each within the first three minutes of play, forcing coach Rieker into a time out to reshuffle his lineup, still up three at 12-9.

Maumee Valley's press began to wear on the foul-plagued guests and MV rolled to a 9-1 finish during the remaining quarter.  Highlights include this Rashad Woodley power-in shot to give the Hawks the lead for good:

Here, the Hawks play great defense against a Stritch back-cut and work their offense for a Danny Hazimah finish:

Rashad Woodley scores off a nice pass from Danny

The Hawks went into the locker room with a 18-13 halftime lead.

Third Quarter - MV 21 - CS 7

With he Cardinals down and in great need of a win, everyone in the Varsity Gym knew a press was coming at the Hawks.  Everyone in this case included the Hawks coaching staff which noted that Cardinal Stritch's trap features an effort to drive the ball handler towards the sideline for a 2 or even 3 man trap.  This calls for the counter of a press break right down the middle enabling a forward to drive to the hoop for fairly uncontested shots.

The beneficiary of all this strategy on a cold Wednesday evening was MVCDS senior Solomon Collins, who made the visitors' strategy his own personal gold mine.

Everyone can stop looking, they're right down the middle of the key exactly 10 feet up.

For the third straight quarter, Cardinal Stritch's opened the scoring - Austin Adams again. The quarter turned into an all-press, all the time eight minutes.  This was distinctly to the Hawks' advantage.

Solomon scored eight points en route to a 12-0 Hawks run (Thad Woodard scoring the other four).  Here, he drives through the zone for a layup.

MV had doubled their guests up, 30-15.  Cardinal Stritch fought back with two straight baskets on offensive rebounds, but MV kept pressing and scoring.  With the Hawks up 36-21 and the clock winding down, Lucas Isaza fired this dagger to put Maumee Valley ahead by 18 at quarter's end.

Fourth Quarter - CS 22 - MV 21

Now down a bunch and in desperate need of offense, the Cardinals turned to their main man, Austin Adams.  Adams outscored MV 6-2 to open the frame. MV's two points came when Lucas Isaza decisively fired this the pass to a cutting Solomon Collins...

...but CS clawed back to within ten points, 45-35, with 4:48 left, with Rashad Woodley scoring on this in bounds play to fend off the guests during this stretch.

No surprise, this comeback was led by Adams, who had nine points in just over three minutes.  Coach Arthur sensed his team needed a lift and called time out to draw up a counterattack.  MV executed like George Patton's Third Army Corps on the Continent...

...
I want you...to score five points in a row!!!

and scores by Solomon and Marcus Knabbs, on an 'and-one' put MV back up by 15.

Stritch was now forced to put MV on the foul line in the last two minutes, and the Hawks, namely Lucas Isaza, Thad Woodard, Marcus Knabbs and Nick Towns made their shots put the game away.

Final Score MV 60 - CS 43.

Scoring

Austin Adams led all scorers with 23 points.  For MV,

Danny Hazimah - 4
Marcus Knabbs - 5
Lucas Isaza - 8
