2013-4 Season Chapter One - Fayette 40 - MV 28 Opening Night - Game Story

November 30, 2013 - MV Varsity Gym

As noted previously in this space, MV's Winterim program is a highlight experience for every High Schooler.  Alumni invariably hold fond remembrances of their one month of independent or group study.  Winterim typically takes MV students from Toledo to the far corners of the earth for great experiences.

Winterim also can make for some catch-up on the basketball court, as the MV travelers normally return less than a week before the season begins.  Sometimes it takes a game or two to shake the rust off.

This seemed to be the case Saturday November 30, 2013, when the Hawks dropped their first home opener since 2009 against a tough Fayette Eagles' team 40-28 at the Varsity Gym.

Fayette jumped out to a 10-5 first quarter lead, and packed into a tight 2-3 zone for the entire game.  The Eagles extended their lead to 17-8 at half time.  Highlights were few and far between, but here is a great block by Rashad Woodley with a Marcus Knabbs drive to the basket where he was fouled.

Fayette maintained their lead in the third quarter and were up 23-13 with 1:00 left.

The Hawks came to life at that point, scoring seven points in the last sixty seconds of the frame on a Truth Foreman three ball at the 0:55 mark,

which he followed up on by stealing the ball and driving for another basket:

Danny Hazimah capped off the quarter with another steal and field goal as time expired.  The Hawks clawed back to within three points, down 23-20 by the end of the third quarter.

But that would be the high water mark for the home team on this rare Thanksgiving weekend game.  Cold shooting from beyond the arc for the Hawks and ball control offense by the Eagles served the visitors well down the stretch and Fayette came away with the win.

So not the start the home team was looking for, but flashes of good play abounded on this Saturday night.  Coach Josh Arthur got to see his entire team on the floor on this night and looks to have a deep bench through the entire season.

Scoring:
Truth Foreman - 5
Danny Hazimah - 2
Marcus Knabbs - 1
Lucas Isaza - 4
Thad Woodard - 5
Solomon Collins - 7
Rashad Woodley - 2
