Toledo Blade preview of Northwood
Coach: John Bryan, first season
Last season: 7-14, 4-8 TAAC
This season: 3-6, 2-2 TAAC
Top players: Seniors David Green, 6-5, F; John Romstadt, 5-10 G; Zack Wielinski, 6-3, G-F. Junior John Willey, 5-8, G.
Outlook: The Rangers will be playing under the direction of their third head coach in as many seasons. The latest coach is approaching the season cautiously optimistic about the team showing progress over the course of the season.
"It is definitely a work in progress, but I think the ending is going to be pretty nice," Bryan said. "We have to work on our fundamentals. We're hoping everything is on the climb for Northwood. We can see where we want to go, but it's going to take some time."
Green (9.0 rpg), Romstadt, and Wielinski figure to serve as anchors for a team looking to rebuild.
Last year: Maumee Valley won the first game against the Rangers at home in a big way, 66-30. The road game was a different story, a nail biter which went down to the very last moments when MV pulled out a 43-40 win.
Hawkblog notes: Northwood’s TAAC wins were both at home against Emmanuel (57-43) and Cardinal Stritch (57-54), with losses at Ottawa Hills (65-26) and Danbury (54-53)…it’s the first year for head coach John Bryan, one of three new mentors in the league (Drew Davie from Danbury and Dave Ricker from Stritch)…BCSN was originally scheduled for Northwood in anticipation of Coach Robinson’s 500th win, but the Monclova game cancellation pushed back that opportunity…Northwood has a wrestling team, which cuts into the pool of winter sport athletes.
