Maumee Valley dropped a 31-24 decision to the Emmanuel Christian Warriors at Roy Parmelee Gymnasium, a game scheduled early so many in the crowd could get back to watch their beloved Buckeyes defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks 31-26 in the Sugar Bowl. The game was broadcast on BCSN (the girls game - not the Sugar Bowl, silly).
It was a tough shooting night for the Hawks, who only converted 21% from the floor during the evening. MV fell behind early then fought back early in the fourth quarter to tie the score, but EC converted its free throws down the stretch for the win. EC itself only converted 30%, but that was good enough for the victory.
Starting five: Kristin Bigelow (‘12), Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Jazmine Aldridge-Brownlee (‘12), Genna Danes (‘12) and Wesley Flaum (‘12)
First Quarter EC 6 – MV 4
It was a 2-3 zone-fest early as both teams started uneasily with several turnovers. MV had difficulty attacking the zone, settling for perimeter shots throughout the first quarter. The Hawks did find success on steals and breakaways by Kristin Bigelow. EC set a game trend only, quickly answering each score with one of its own. Late in the quarter, Jordan Baker entered the game for defensive purposes. The Hawks had the last chance in the first quarter but did not convert.
Second Quarter EC 8 – MV 6
Starting the quarter – Jordan, Kristin, Wesley, Genna, Delaney
Kristin led Maumee Valley early with a three pointer off an inbounds play, but again, the Warriors answered back with a three of their own.
MV decided to shake things up and went to a 2-2-1 zone press. Initially the press did not phase the home team. In order to keep a fresh lineup, MV continued substituting with Yasmin AbdelKarim at the 4:42 mark.
Full season correction – I’ve been spelling Yasmin’s name wrong all season. Sorry about that.
Genna scored a three pointer near the two minute mark, but EC came right back and had the lead, 14-10.
Cammie Lonsway entered the game with 1:50 to go in the quarter and immediately contributed with a strong rebound. However Maumee Valley continued their scoring drought and the quarter ended with EC ahead by four.
Third Quarter EC 6 – MV 5
Starting the quarter – initial game starters
Both teams again started the quarter missing several early opportunities, MV continuing to struggle to get the ball inside against the 2-3. Kristin eventually drove into the heart of the defense and draw a shooting foul at the 5:15 mark. She converted the back end, then MV called a time out.
Two adjustments were made at this point. MV came back to the press, but more importantly began to run a high post game with Genna at the foul line. This proved effective for Genna as she began to convert her open looks.
EC answered right back, but the Hawks’ pressure began to affect the hosts’ game. EC called time to regroup, but MV got the ball back and Genna made another basket in the paint to pull MV to 18-15.
Again, EC returned fire with a two and play continued slowly. Kristin scored the last Hawk points for the quarter, converting a break off a Jasmine steal
Emmanuel had a chance to score at the buzzer, but good team defense thwarted the Warrior threat. At the end of three, it was EC 20 – MV 15.
Fourth quarter EC 11 – MV 11
Starting the quarter – Jasmine, Wesley, Cammie, Kristin, Genna
For the first time in the game, MV came out firing. Genna hit a three to open the frame for MV.
MV’s pressure began to wear on the Warriors and MV scored the next two baskets to pull ahead 22-20. It would be the high point of the evening for the visitors.
EC answered back with a two pointer. MV’s press moved much of the game to the middle of the court between the three point arcs. Kristin was fouled at 4:27 left and would convert one of two to give the Hawks their last lead of the evening 23-22. EC scored the next four points, but play continued back and forth. Cammie Lonsway was very effective in the press defense, forcing the Emmanuel point guards into traps.
The Hawks offense was hampered in the fourth when Kristin appeared to struggle with leg cramps. She stayed in the full game, but play was stopped twice to allow her to stretch out. Emmaunel would take advantage and score on a three-ball to go ahead 26-23. Genna was fouled at 2:01 and would make one shot for the Hawks last points.
With a dwindling clock and an EC lead, Maumee Valley was forced to take more chances on the press leading to a few late Warrior points. The game ended 31-24 in favor of Emmanuel.
Scoring
It was Butch and Sundance riding alone for Maumee Valley this evening, the only scoring registered by Genna (13) and Kristin (11).
Next up
After the tough loss, the Hawks regroup for a home game Friday night against the Danbury Lakers. Tipoff is at 6pm. Danbury doubled up Cardinal Stritch 40-20 in a Tuesday night TAAC contest.
