2013-4 Season Chapter Nine- Great Starts in History - Maumee Valley 62 - Emmanuel Christian 22 - Game Story
Saturday January 4, 2014 - EC's Roy Parmelee Gymnasium
Maumee Valley played what may have been the best three quarters of basketball in recent history Saturday evening, as they rolled up a 39 point lead at Emmanuel Christian. The Hawks soared to a 40 point win, 62-22.
Not that the wind-up was bad either. Coach Josh Arthur emptied his bench in the fourth quarter and several players gained valuable varsity floor time. Among those would be a JV player, given the famous number 44 for the game, making his Hawks debut.
Welcome Jamaal McGee!! Many happy returns, points, assists, etc.
Anyway, thinking about the first sentence above prompted your Hawkblogger to consider some other famous starts in History.
Some things start out fine and don't end so well - take the Roman Empire for example:
Or the career of one George A. Custer
Pretty much any Cleveland Indians or Detroit Lions Season looks promising early on...
But some things start OK and only get better:
On to the game.
Starters - Marcus Knabbs ('14), Lucas Isaza ('15), Thad Woodard ('14), Nick Towns ('15), Rashad Woodley ('14)
First Quarter - MV 17 - EC 5
It took the Hawks about a minute and a half to get their rhythm, as EC's half court trap forced Marcus Knabbs into two early fouls. But those would be the only tense moments for MV on the night. Emmanuel held a 3-2 lead on the strength of three Adam Regnier free throws, and kept it within one point at 6-5 about 3:30 into the game. Bur the onslaught began with this Solomon Collins basket....
And the Hawks found a few weaknesses in their host's game. Mamuee Valley's pressure defense transformed the game quickly, creating at six turnovers in the next 4:30. Things were clicking on the offensive side of the ball illustrated by a pair of three pointers caught on video.
Here's Keith McClure...
And Zain Bedi to end the quarter....
Second Quarter - MV 22 - EC 6
The Warriors started the quarter right with an Adam Regnier old fashioned three pointer, but as can be deduced from the above subhead, that would account for 50% of their output. Maumee Valley steamrolled to a 22-3 run the rest of the quarter. MV scored in a variety of ways
- here running their offence - see this sequence leading to a foul on Eurosteppin' Lucas Isaza
Two points for Thad Woodard on a steal you can see coming 1.60934 kilometers away:
The Hawks deny EC the ball in bounds, then Zain Bedi hits a looong two pointer like it was a layup
Coach Dave Regnier was not pleased with his team's play during this stretch and called two time outs during the MV roll to keep his Warrior's collective head in the game.
But the points just kept on coming. Here's Rashad Woodley finishing a fast break:
The halftime score was 39-11.
Lost in this summary is the point that Emmanuel Christian is not a bad team. They feature an experienced point guard and a 6' 5" post player. This is a season of big men in the TAAC.
That notwithstanding, MV's senior-led (Thad Woodard, Marcus Knabbs, Solomon Collins Rashad Woodley and Danny Hazimah) swarming defense continues to improve. The 9-15 man lineup allows for constant pressure the entire game. This weighs heavily on the opposing lineup, especially if that opponent's bench is not deep.
Such is often the case in Division IV basketball. Therefore Coach Arthur is molding a large group of athletes into an intimidating team. This group conjures memories of the deep Toledo Christian and Central Catholic teams faced by MV over the last seven years. One wave comes in at full speed, with another group available right behind them. The primary goal of this style of play is to instill doubt in the opponent's mind. MV has done this in increasing fashion the last four weeks.
Half time - EC concession stand 2 - MV 0
In the worst stretch of the evening, Nick Frasco '12 and Caleb Willhight '13 clang iron from the free throw line, losing all chance of free popcorn or sno-conage.
Fortunately their fashion sense ranks them in everyone's top ten list. Unfortunately they missed their chance at the TAAC's best concession stand.
Third Quarter - MV 14 - EC 3
It was deja' vu all over again in the third quarter. Maumee Valley forced more turnovers and unforced errors than the Warriors' had points. The third quarter video highlights feature another Thad Woodard steal and cleanup hoop:
...and here's MV spreading the 2-3 zone to perfection. Truth Foreman's trey ended the third quarter scoring.
After 24 minutes of elapsed time, Maumee Valley was on top of their hosts by a 53-14 count.
Fourth Quarter - MV 9 - EC 8
The highlight of the fourth quarter was the varsity debut of Juwaan McGee '16. Juwaan entered at the 6:55 mark, right here
and entered the scoring roll with two points on a fast break opportunity, Truth continued to singe the nets...
Zain scored yet again, this time from close range
the teams played out the last frame fairly evenly. Coach Arthur played a long bench this evening, with all 14 Hawks seeing action.
Scoring
Truth Foreman - 6
Danny Hazimah - 2
Marcus Knabbs - 1
Zain Bedi - 7
Keith McClure - 6
Lucas Isaza - 7
Nick Towns - 6
Thad Woodard - 6
Solomon Collins - 9
Rashad Woodley - 10
Juwaan McGee - 2
Final thoughts
Here's hoping the Hawks keep getting better and better. A team which was a pre-season selection to finish in the bottom half of the TAAC is currently tied for first place.
Some things get better with age
some don't
How will this great 2013-4 MVCDS start roll on? The team has made a few believers and the next few weeks will offer a chance to convince many more. Go Hawks!

Maumee Valley 60 - Emmanuel Christian 22 - Insightful Internet Commentary (Double Shot Edition)
Maumee Valley played one of its best halves of basketball in Hawkblogger recorded history Saturday evening, taking a commanding 37-11 halftime lead en route to a 38 point win at Emmanuel Christian.
We have not one, but two IIC's tonight. First an all-star alumni panel featuring Nick Frasco, Caleb Willhight, Rick Deichert, and still the hardest working man in MV basketball Daniel Brandon
Next up, it's a Cecil B. DeMille-esque cast of thousands - Keith McClure, Truth Foreman, Rashad Woodley, Tim Zeller, and Juwaan McGee, who made his varsity debut this evening wearing the illustrious Hammerin' Hank Aaron No. 44 jersey.

Hawks picked third in pre-season TAAC poll
The Blade TAAC preview is up, you can view it here. Your Hawkblogger appreciated the tone of Steve Junga's article, very complimentary to the TAAC as a competitive basketball force in Northwest Ohio.
The hat-tip to Coach Dave McWhinnie of TC for driving the TAAC to excellence is also well deserved.
The Rankings:
1. Toledo Christian
2. Ottawa Hills
3. Maumee Valley
4. Gibsonburg
5. Cardinal Stritch
6. Emmanuel Christian
7. Northwood
8. Danbury
But as always, you gotta play the games...

MV 62 – Emmanuel Christian 37 - Insightful Internet Commentary
Your Hawkblog goes into the stands this evening for erudition - Peter Funk, Tyrone Cobham, Nihal Kattar and Jeremy Anderson unlock the game secrets on the evening.
Maumee Valley 62 - Emmaunel Christian 37 - Quick Summary
Maumee Valley won its lucky 13th in a row tonight against the Emmanuel Christian Warriors 62-37 at the Varsity Gym. The game had a bit of a different vibe from the first contest. EC played more deliberate basketball to start the game out and were able to hang in the game for a while; down only 11-7 at the end of one quarter. But the Hawks played stout defense in the second quarter and held their guests to a Dave Regnier three pointer. The Hawksquad wore down Emmanuel from there and won going away.
The Hawks were tough tonight on the inside, shooting a blistering 69.7% from two point range. Outside shooting was meh, 2-14, for a big 14.3%. Gotta pick that up.
EC was missing its dynamic small forward Tyrese Edwards to an injury suffered a few weeks back during the Warriors' game against Gibsonburg. HawkNation wishes Tyrese a speedy and full recovery. Elsewhere, it was mayhem (and your Hawkblogger doesn't mean Dixon Stoddard) tonight in the TAAC as Ottawa Hills stunned Toledo Christian 48-39 in OT. The win likely dashes any argument the Eagles had for the second seed in sectionals.
Speaking of speedy recoveries, HawkNation wants to wish Rashaan Preston a fast one from a separated shoulder he suffered tonight near game's end. It popped back in on its own, but not before some major league pain. Rashaan took things remarkably well, all things considered. Hurry back soon.
Given the shooting percentages above, the scoring leaders for the Hawks are who you'd expect. Julius Turner led with 18, Jared Sturt had 16, Rick Deichert 8, Davey Brown 6, Rashaan Preston, Dixon Stoddard and Caleb Willhight each had 4, and Jonathan Krueger had 2.
The JVs completed a come from behind victory in the opener, 37-32. JV scoring - Lucas Isaza 10, Marcus Knabbs, Rashaan Preston and Thad Woodard 6, Nick Towns 5 and Danny Hazimah 4. The JVs kept their poise in the fourth and made their free throws to ice down the win.

MV 66 - EC 44 Insightful Internet Commentary
The following gems of wisdom are brought to you by Jeremy Anderson, Zain Bedi, Lucas Isaza. Shockingly, Thad Woodard wormed his way into another video. Special cameo appearance by Nick Towns.
MV 66 (at) EC 44 - 1.7.12 - Quick Summary
Maumee Valley knocked off one of the co-leaders in the TAAC this evening, rolling over the Emmanuel Christian Warriors 66-44 at the Roy Parmelee Gymnasium. The game had the added bonus of making birthday boy Roger Spurgeon one happy quadragenarian. The Warriors tried every defense in their book tonight against the Hawks:
...none of them worked particularly well.
Julius Turner would have one of his best nights ever in the storied RPG, scoring 24. This total included a stellar 10-11 from the line. Jared Sturt and Rick Deichert also thrived against the defenseapalooza tonight, contributing 18 and 17 points respectively. Also scoring for the Hawks were Dave Brown with 4, Jon Krueger with 2 and Rashaan Preston with 1.
Speaking of defense, the Stopper of the Game award had to go to Jon Krueger, who held TAAC leading scorer Tyrese Edwards to eight points on the evening, thirteen points below his 20.9 ppg average. Congratulations to Jon on this feat.
The JVs also won big, defeating their EC counterparts 48-22. JV scoring - Marcus Knabbs 3, Solomon Collins 10, Rashaan Preston 7, Robbie Ariss 2, Kadar Jones 3, Rashad Woodley 2, Trueth Foreman 2, Nick Towns 2, Lucas Isaza 10 and Thad Woodard 7.
Lest the JVs get too carried away, let the record show they were 6-15 from the line this evening. (The preceeding announcement was paid for and approved by Coach Clark).
- the standard 2-3 zone
- box and one against Rick
- a half court trapping defense
- straight man
- a full court press
- and a partridge in a pear tree

EC preview
Fast facts
Opponent: Emmanuel Christian
Enrollment (9-12): 128
Division/League: TAAC
Team Nickname: Warriors
From the Toledo Blade's TAAC preview:
Coach: Dave Regnier, 21st season
Last season: 9-12, 3-9
This season: 5-2, 3-0 TAAC
Top returning players: Seniors Tyrece Edwards, 6-1, F; Brett Forster, 6-0, F. Juniors Ryan Creech, 6-2, F; Josh Regnier, 5-5, G; Carlton Brown, 5-10, G; Bobby Behan, 5-8, G; Leland Snyder, 5-8, G.
Outlook: Coach Regnier has three starters back. Creech averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds per contest, while Edwards averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game. Josh Regnier had 5 points and 2.5 assists per contest.
Strengths should include some depth and solid guard play as well as good overall team quickness and shooting ability.
"This is a great group of guys to work with," Coach Reginier said. "We have good overall experience on this team."
But EC does not have a great deal of depth in the post and overall size could be a potential trouble area.
"I believe that we will be very competitive in the conference," Coach Regnier said. "We will need to stay healthy in our post positions and in other key areas. How our juniors step into roles that they have not had before will be a key to the season."
Game Notes: The Warriors are currently tied for first in the TAAC after being picked to finish 6th in the pre-season coaches poll...EC features the top two scorers in the league, the 1-2 punch of Tyrece Edwards and Ryan Creech...Creech currently leads the TAAC in rebounding...Emmanuel had a huge comeback win agains Cardinal Stritch, overcoming a 18 point deficit.

Boys' JV Beats Emmanuel Christian Warriors 45-27
From Hawkblog Special Correspondent Portia Ash
Another TAAC Friday night matchup had the Hawks traveling to Emmanuel Christian to face the Warriors for the second time on the season. The Hawks were victorious over the Warriors with excellent all around play. And once again fans were treated to really good music by a great TAAC pep band. The Warriors have some very talented musicians in their ranks.
The Hawks opened up a 24-14 lead over the Warriors going into halftime and never looked back. A tenacious defense and good execution of their offense were the keys to the game for the Hawks.
The second half yielded more of the same for the Hawks. Great passing, good help defense, solid guard play and solid play down in the post propelled the Hawks to a 45-27 win over the Warriors.
Up next, the Hawks face the Danbury Lakers tonight at home. Go Hawks!
Scoring - Collins 12, King 11, Okeke 9, Knabbs 4, Woodard 4, Willhight 3, Hazimah 2

Chapter 13 – Road Warrior-Beaters – Hawks 63 – (at) EC52 – 2.4.11 – Game Story
Setting the Table
Google the words ‘how hard is winning on the road’ and at least for me, the first post that comes up is from a University of Memphis fan website entitled ‘Winning on the road is Really Hard’.
Scroll down the search results for evidence of this statement – Ohio State has the only winning road record in Big Ten play…as of two weeks ago, only three ACC conference games were won by the road team…and my favorite, an article from the fine New York Times Quad Blog entitled ‘In the SEC, Winning on the Road Is Not Easy’.
Maumee Valley has enjoyed tremendous success on the road this year, winning its first six games in hostile territory (one loss at a neutral site). As the season progresses, these games will get harder in at least one way. With the surprise angle out of the way – MV going 14- 6 last year and currently tied for the TAAC lead – there are no more games where the Hawks will be taken for granted.
To be sure, no TAAC coach has felt this way for some time. MV has had a camp-following of opposing scouts following it, even on the longest road trips of the year. There are no sleeping coaches in the Conference.
Now however, the fans are beginning to pick up on this. The Blue and White not being scheduled for as many Winter Homecoming Dance Evenings and Senior Nights any more. And Friday night at Emmanuel, MV played in front of the largest home contingent I’ve seen in the Roy Parmelee Gymnasium in at least eight years.
The home faithful were decked out in Hawaiian Shirts and leis – not too sure what that was about – but school spirit abounded. Even the PA announcer got the fever in the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately for the Warriors on the night of this basketball luau, the Hawks decided they did not want to be on the menu…
Game Summary
The Blue and White extended their record to 11-2 last evening with a 63-52 win at Emmanuel Christian.
Three Hawks scored in double figures; Jared Sturt with 25 and Julius Turner with 18 each established new season high totals. Julius got his first start of the season at his former school. Rick Deichert scored 13 for MV.
Jared had his first dunk of his career on the evening. Here is a link to the TV13 game summary featuring the slam. He'd follow up with another before the night was through.
Tony Behan had 28 points for the Warriors to lead all scorers.
Maumee Valley had 61 shot attempts from the floor vs. 47 for the Warriors, the product of superior rebounding. MV enjoyed a 27-11 rebounding advantage overall.
First Quarter MV 9 – EC 5
Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Dixon Stoddard (’12) and Julius Turner (’12)
For the second time in two nights, an Emmanuel Christian team played a junk defense against their Maumee Valley counterparts. On Thursday, EC played a box and one, focusing on Kristin Bigelow. Friday, the box and one reared its head in the boys’ game with Dave Brown receiving the special attention.
More generally, EC’s strategy was to pressure the MV guards all evening. Although that scheme would have its moments, it also led to season-high scoring performances by two of the Hawks front line players.
MV started in man defense.
Emmanuel’s senior guard Tony Behan opened the scoring with a three from the top of the key. Dixon Stoddard came back with an easy basket, bouncing the ball off an EC player on an inbounds play for two, then Rick Deichert made a great pass off a rebound to Jared for another basket and the Hawks were up 4-3.
Play was uneventful for the next two minutes. Both teams struggled to find some offensive flow until Julius grabbed a rebound and drove coast-to-coast drawing the shooting foul. He would convert one of two. MV cycled into a full court zone press and forced a travel call on EC. Julius showed off his passing skills next, finding a cutting Dixon Stoddard from the foul line and it was 7-3 MV.
Another traveling call on EC forced a stoppage in play and Jonathan Krueger made his first appearance of the evening at 4:29 remaining.
Again it was Julius’ turn against his former mates, this time juking in along the left baseline for two. With 3:51 left and EC down 9-3, Coach Dave Regnier called time out hoping to reverse the Warriors’ fortune.
MV came out of the time out in its hybrid 2-3, got the ball back but missed. Behan scored for EC on the next possession on an acrobatic inbounds pass. He looked like he tripped and made his shot as he was falling to the ground.
MV’s shooting turned cold, and the EC basket would be the final points of the first quarter. MV led by four.
Second Quarter MV 22 – EC 10
Starting the Quarter – Nick Frasco, Dave, Dixon, Julius and Jared
Julius put the chef’s hat on at the start of the quarter…
… serving a delicious pass to Jared on a drive from the left wing for two. Dave Brown’s tenacious defense forced a five second call and the Hawks were in business again. MV ran the exact same offensive set, but this time Julius drove the whole way for two and drew the foul. He made the bonus shot and MV led 14-5.
Dave harassed the EC ball handler once more, stealing the ball and drawing the shooting foul. He made one of two and the Hawks got possession off a Warrior miss. One more time for Julius, as he powered in from the short corner for two.
It was 17-5 Maumee Valley at the 5:55 mark and Coach Regnier called another time out to regroup.
With the Hawks in man defense again, Jared stole the ball outside the three point circle and got it to Dave for the fast break. The initial shot missed, but Jared got the rebound on the trailer and tipped the ball in for a basket + 1, which he converted.
The Warriors finally got into the scoring column near the 4:30 mark on an old fashioned three pointer by Junior guard Tyrece Edwards, cutting the lead down to 20-8.
Following a few unfruitful possessions, Julius nailed a three-ball from the right wing for the visitors. The Hawk forward would commit his second foul of the quarter with 3:20 remaining and go to the bench.
Rick Deichert scored the next two points for MV on an offensive putback but then Jon Krueger committed his third foul of the half with 1:32 remaining. He would be replaced by Sophomore AJ King.
Jared scored next for MV, dribbling down the right hand lane for two points. The teams exchanged turnovers, Jared tipped a rebound in with time expiring to give the visitors a 16 point half-time lead, 31-15.
Maumee Valley’s dominance in the half was borne out statistically. MV took 28 two point shots to EC’s 14, making 13 baskets. The guests out-rebounded their hosts 13-6 and also held a 10-5 advantage in the turnover column.
Third Quarter EC 16 – MV 12
Starting the quarter – initial game starters
MV got the first score of the half from a Julius Turner three pointer. The 19 point lead would be the Hawks' largest all evening.
EC’s Ryan Creech scored two, then after Julius made a free throw, Tony Behan rebounded his own shot and made the putback.
MV stopped the next Warrior posession and got out on the break...
...with Jared finishing.
Tony Behan answered back with a three to cut the lead to 13, then was fouled while shooting a three pointer. He made all three, then after a MV miss scored on another three pointer and the Hawks lead had been cut to 37-30.
The home crowd, many of them dressed-up in Hawaiian shirts (the Rainbow Warriors?) were now doing the hula, and Coach Robinson called time with 2:54 to play. The Hawks had some front line foul issues – both Jon and Dixon had three fouls each and Julius had a pair.
Coming out of the break, Coach Robinson surmised that EC would go for the trap and drew up this press breaker to Jared for two…
Then, off came Julius' chef’s hat as he donned a more serious chapeau
…who stole a pass and drove to the hoop for two points.
MV closed out the quarter with this two pointer by Jared to end the half.
And so the Hawksquad pulled out of a mini-tailspin to retake a double digit lead, 43-30.
Fourth Quarter EC 22 – MV 20
Starting the Quarter – Dave, Rick, Dixon, Jon, Jared
Dave and Rick dribbled 1:10 off the clock at the beginning of the half then missed a shot attempt. EC’s Senior guard Michael Henning scored at the opposite end.
Coach Robinson called another time out to draw up a response and Rick hit a three pointer that made it on TV13’s Basketball Friday show. Good timing there!
Down 13, the Warriors went to a full court press. MV capitalized when Dave Brown pulled the defenders his way then passed to Jared for two...
Dixon was then called for his fourth foul with 4:21 to play. MV got the ball back for Julius to make a free throw, but at the other end Dixon drew his fifth and final foul. He was gone at the 3:52 mark.
EC continued its comeback with more scoring from Tony Behan, Ryan Creech and Jason Regnier to cut the lead back to eight, 49-41, with 3:30 left. EC’s press would again prove effective, but Guard Tyrese Edwards was called for an offensive foul at 2:43.
The Warriors’ PA announcer, getting a little too much into the action at Roy Parmelee Gymnasium, lamented that ‘the mysterious foul was called on Tyrese Edwards’.
MV called time again to diagram things and Rick scored on a two pointer down the lane.
Emmanel then threw the ball into the back court and with 2:03 left, Jared scored two on his first career dunk. The Hawks were back up by 15, 55-41.
Tony Behan wouldn’t quit and drew another foul shooting three. He made two and Ryan Creech scored a basket + 1 to pull their Warriors back to 57-47, but with about a minute left, time was on the visitors’ side.
Jared made two, following Jon on a breakaway
Rick scored another two, then Dave Brown converted two free throws at the 22.8 second mark. EC scored a two pointer, then (in this video sequence) Rick again made a basket and in a bookend to the game’s initial points, Tony Behan hit a three for the last of his 28 point effort.
The buzzer sounded as Behan’s shot scorched the nets, but it only cut the final MV lead to 11. The Blue and White walked off the court a winner 63-52.
Final Game Thoughts
The Hawks improved to 11-2 and 7-1 in the TAAC, on big performances from their front court players. They remain undefeated on the road (7-0) with only Cardinal Stritch and Monclova Christian left to play outside the Varsity Gym.
With this strong traveling performance it’s tempting to assume every road game will be a walk. But away games are tough. Just ask Danbury, who lost Friday at Cardinal Stritch (see remaining away games above).
Statistically, the Hawksquad dominated in shots taken and rebounding. They did commit 13 turnovers to EC’s 11, but did steal the ball six times in the game (Rick and Julius with two each) compared with only two for Emmanuel.
Tony Behan gets my vote for all-TAAC based on his performance against the Hawks this year. In my opinion he’s the biggest offensive threat in the TAAC.
MV continues to pose multiple threats to its opponents. It’s pick your poison against the Hawks. The last two games, coaches have designed defenses around Dave and Rick to the benefit of Julius, Jared, Dixon and Jonathan. The guards are looking for some love next time around…
A tribute
Due to my close booster ties, I would be remiss if I failed to compliment the Warriors’ faculty, staff and boosters for:
1. The Best Danged Pep Band In The TAAC (TBDPBITTAAC?), a large group including a cello (!) and great song selection played with spirit and skill, and
2. The best consession stand in the TAAC – hot dogs, brats, burgers, soup, ice cream sundaes, floats…you name it, it was there.
Scoring
And now for the happy totals. Three Hawks scored in double figures; Jared Sturt with 25 and Julius Turner with 18 each established new season-high totals. Rick Deichert scored 13 for MV. Dixon Stoddard scored 4 and Dave Brown finished with 3 for MV.
Next up
It’s home-sweet-home for Maumee Valley as the Hawks enjoy the friendly confines of the Varsity Gym for five of their last seven games, including their next three straight. Next week, MV will host Danbury on Tuesday, February 8 and Northwood on Friday, February 11. The rescheduled showdown with Ottawa Hills will take place the following Tuesday February 15. OH defeated Toledo Christian last evening 47-39 (at home, get it?), effectively eliminating the Eagles from the TAAC race.

MV girls 37 - Emmanuel Christian 32 - 2.3.11 at the Varsity Gym
The MV Girls defeated the Emmaunel Christian Warriors 37-32 on Thursday February 3, 2011 at the Varsity Gym. The Hawks rode to victory on the strength of a dominating 16-6 first quarter then staved off a EC comeback fueled by three (count ‘em, three) three-point bank shots.
Starting the game - Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Jazmine Aldridge-Brownlee (‘12), Genna Danes (‘12), Karla Luketic (‘11) and Kristin Bigelow (’12) – also playing for MV – Yazmin AbdelKarim (’12), Jordan Baker (’14), and Wesley Flaum (’12 – Welcome Back!)
First Quarter MV 16 - EC 6
EC started out in a box and one defense, keying on Kristin. MV played it’s standard 2-3 but also worked the press during the evening.
It’s a surprise to me that more teams haven’t tried junk defenses against the Hawks, but the Warriors would pay for this experiment in the first quarter.
The first issue EC had was the box left the Hawks open for shots from some of their favorite places. Delaney started the game out this way with a three pointer from the left wing.
The second issue was that Kristin was able to get free from her defender and drive to the basket, which she did for the next two points in the game.
The Hawks played pressure defense early on, forcing several turnovers by EC.
Back to that box zone – first Delaney hit a two pointer from the left side, then Karla, with plenty of time to line up, swished a three pointer. It was 10-2 Hawks early.
Two free throws by Delaney, then this long two pointer by Kristin…
...plus another two pointer and the Hawks finished their best quarter of the season up by 10.
Second Quarter MV 6 – EC 4
Starting the quarter – Sorry, I was distracted by the sheer awesomenity of the Hawks first quarter and didn’t write the starters down.
Kristin started it off for MV with a two pointer. After two points by EC’s Mymy Allen, Kristin scored two more off a high post pass from Genna.
Near the end of the half, Delaney made the defensive play of the game, blocking a Warrior layup from behind on a fast break. At the half, MV led 22-10.
Third Quarter – MV 9 – EC 9
Starting the quarter – initial game starters
MV started with good movement on defense, illustrated by this stop and fast break
On offense, MV also moved the ball well, including these two plays
First, a good pass out from Jasmine to Kristin
and a longer sequence ending with a Delaney 2 pointer.
Both teams played back and forth basketball during the quarter. EC started to pressure further out near the end of the quarter realizing time was short. MV effectively handled the press, and battled the Warriors to a draw. At the end of three, it was MV 31 – EC 19
Fourth Quarter – EC 13 – MV 6
Starting the quarter – Kristin, Karla, Delaney, Jordan and Jasmin
Coach Mussery was able to teach a few new schemes and plays during the quarter. For a two minute stretch, the Hawks were able to work a diamond passing arrangement to run clock against the 2-3 zone.
He also got the team to run a few effective high post plays, including this set ending with two points for Jasmine.
At the two minute mark EC switched into a half court man press defense which created some turnovers for EC. And as noted in the game summary, the Warriors hit three three-point bank shots in the middle of the quarter to make things moderately interesting.
But MV hit some key free throws down the stretch, aided by the student cheering section.
The Hawks were never up less than five and that's how it ended - 37-32.
Final thoughts
A great game for MV, which scored more points in the first half than they did in the entire first game at EC. They neutralized the Warriors’ inside game by collapsing on the ball handler deep inside the paint. They also played effective press defense and even got some quality possessions running the high post offense.
Now at 5-9, the Hawks face more TAAC opponents in their drive to finish in fifth place for the year. The home game on Thursday, February 17 vs. Cardinal Stritch will be key.
Scoring
Kristin Bigelow scored 21 to lead all scorers on the evening. Delaney had 11, (a season high), Karla had 3 and Jazmine 2.

Emmanuel Christian Preview - Second Round - 2.4.11 at EC
MV travels to EC Friday to face the Behan and Creech show, otherwise known as the Emmanuel Christian Warriors.
Here is the Round 1 preview of EC.
Here's the Round 1 game summary from December 21, 2011.
Maumee Valley played its most dominating half of basketball this season, jumping out to a 30-13 lead and never looking back as the Hawks cruised to a 56-39 victory. The game was not as close as the final score indicated - MV was up 52-25 with 3:51 to go when Coach Robinson loosened things up down the stretch.
Three Hawks scored in double figures; Rick Deichert led the team with 15 points including three consecutive three-pointers in the first quarter. Julius Turner scored 13 against his former teammates and Dave Brown finished with 11.

Emmanuel has been holding its own in the TAAC. Since the first game with MV, EC has gone 5-4, including wins over Danbury and Northwood. The Warriors stand at 7-7, 3-4 in the Conference, which puts them alone in fourth place. EC was picked to finish fifth in the preseason poll.
In a scheduling quirk, EC has not yet played Ottawa Hills and therefore has two games to go with the Green Bears.
Here is the Round 1 preview of EC.

Emmanuel Christian Girls 31 – MV 24 – 1.4.11 at EC
Maumee Valley dropped a 31-24 decision to the Emmanuel Christian Warriors at Roy Parmelee Gymnasium, a game scheduled early so many in the crowd could get back to watch their beloved Buckeyes defeat the Arkansas Razorbacks 31-26 in the Sugar Bowl. The game was broadcast on BCSN (the girls game - not the Sugar Bowl, silly).
It was a tough shooting night for the Hawks, who only converted 21% from the floor during the evening. MV fell behind early then fought back early in the fourth quarter to tie the score, but EC converted its free throws down the stretch for the win. EC itself only converted 30%, but that was good enough for the victory.
Starting five: Kristin Bigelow (‘12), Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Jazmine Aldridge-Brownlee (‘12), Genna Danes (‘12) and Wesley Flaum (‘12)
First Quarter EC 6 – MV 4
It was a 2-3 zone-fest early as both teams started uneasily with several turnovers. MV had difficulty attacking the zone, settling for perimeter shots throughout the first quarter. The Hawks did find success on steals and breakaways by Kristin Bigelow. EC set a game trend only, quickly answering each score with one of its own. Late in the quarter, Jordan Baker entered the game for defensive purposes. The Hawks had the last chance in the first quarter but did not convert.
Second Quarter EC 8 – MV 6
Starting the quarter – Jordan, Kristin, Wesley, Genna, Delaney
Kristin led Maumee Valley early with a three pointer off an inbounds play, but again, the Warriors answered back with a three of their own.
MV decided to shake things up and went to a 2-2-1 zone press. Initially the press did not phase the home team. In order to keep a fresh lineup, MV continued substituting with Yasmin AbdelKarim at the 4:42 mark.
Full season correction – I’ve been spelling Yasmin’s name wrong all season. Sorry about that.
Genna scored a three pointer near the two minute mark, but EC came right back and had the lead, 14-10.
Cammie Lonsway entered the game with 1:50 to go in the quarter and immediately contributed with a strong rebound. However Maumee Valley continued their scoring drought and the quarter ended with EC ahead by four.
Third Quarter EC 6 – MV 5
Starting the quarter – initial game starters
Both teams again started the quarter missing several early opportunities, MV continuing to struggle to get the ball inside against the 2-3. Kristin eventually drove into the heart of the defense and draw a shooting foul at the 5:15 mark. She converted the back end, then MV called a time out.
Two adjustments were made at this point. MV came back to the press, but more importantly began to run a high post game with Genna at the foul line. This proved effective for Genna as she began to convert her open looks.
EC answered right back, but the Hawks’ pressure began to affect the hosts’ game. EC called time to regroup, but MV got the ball back and Genna made another basket in the paint to pull MV to 18-15.
Again, EC returned fire with a two and play continued slowly. Kristin scored the last Hawk points for the quarter, converting a break off a Jasmine steal
Emmanuel had a chance to score at the buzzer, but good team defense thwarted the Warrior threat. At the end of three, it was EC 20 – MV 15.
Fourth quarter EC 11 – MV 11
Starting the quarter – Jasmine, Wesley, Cammie, Kristin, Genna
For the first time in the game, MV came out firing. Genna hit a three to open the frame for MV.
MV’s pressure began to wear on the Warriors and MV scored the next two baskets to pull ahead 22-20. It would be the high point of the evening for the visitors.
EC answered back with a two pointer. MV’s press moved much of the game to the middle of the court between the three point arcs. Kristin was fouled at 4:27 left and would convert one of two to give the Hawks their last lead of the evening 23-22. EC scored the next four points, but play continued back and forth. Cammie Lonsway was very effective in the press defense, forcing the Emmanuel point guards into traps.
The Hawks offense was hampered in the fourth when Kristin appeared to struggle with leg cramps. She stayed in the full game, but play was stopped twice to allow her to stretch out. Emmaunel would take advantage and score on a three-ball to go ahead 26-23. Genna was fouled at 2:01 and would make one shot for the Hawks last points.
With a dwindling clock and an EC lead, Maumee Valley was forced to take more chances on the press leading to a few late Warrior points. The game ended 31-24 in favor of Emmanuel.
Scoring
It was Butch and Sundance riding alone for Maumee Valley this evening, the only scoring registered by Genna (13) and Kristin (11).

Chapter 5 – A Winter Warrior Waxing – MV 56 – EC 39 - 12.21.10 at Maumee Valley
Setting the Table
It was holiday break at Maumee Valley. In past years, that meant a very small crowd as families would disperse and forget about school for a while. But last night, the Blue and White played before its largest audience of the season, a standing room only crowd of students, parents, alumni and friends.
And the home team would not disappoint the assembled faithful this first day of Winter, heating up the Varsity Gym with their best sustained performance of the season. Coach Robinson would see his 496th career victory this evening.
Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Dixon Stoddard (’12) and Jonathan Krueger (’12)
Game Summary
Maumee Valley played its most dominating half of basketball this season, jumping out to a 30-13 lead and never looking back as the Hawks cruised to a 56-39 victory. The game was not as close as the final score indicated - MV was up 52-25 with 3:51 to go when Coach Robinson loosened things up down the stretch.
Three Hawks scored in double figures; Rick Deichert led the team with 15 points including three consecutive three-pointers in the first quarter. Julius Turner scored 13 against his former teammates and Dave Brown finished with 11.
First Quarter MV 18 – EC 10
One of the TAAC constants is EC’s use of the 2-3 zone. I’ve seen about 8 EC varsity games and they play this defense every time. MV came out in man.
MV started the game in its motion offense and ran nearly 1:20 off the clock warming up. Play was sloppy for the next 40 seconds until Dave Brown took an outlet pass off a steal and took off on the break. Jared Sturt was there for the finish and the Hawks were on the board first at the 6:02 mark.
That was the metaphorical on-switch for the home team. MV turned up the pressure on both ends of the floor. Dave found Jared on a lob pass for another two. Rick Deichert scored a three pointer off an inbounds play, and MV got possession right back on a defensive stop. Dave dribbled into the left hand corner, across the entire length of the base line and fired a pass to Rick who scored from the right wing with his second trey in a row.
In 65 seconds, Maumee Valley rolled up a 10-2 run. EC had seen enough and called a time out with 4:57 left.
The Green and White came out with some good inside passing work and two baskets, but MV kept the pressure up. Rick made his third straight three-ball with 3:24 left in the frame.
Julius Turner entered the game near this point to make his debut against his former teammates. He affected a few shots on defense, but also drew two fouls against him.
Meanwhile, EC had scrapped back to 13-8, but the Warrior zone continued to look like a welcome mat to the Blue and White guards. This time it was Dave’s turn to fire in a three and make it 16-8. Two free throws by Dixon Stoddard and a final basket by EC brought the quarter to a close.
Maumee Valley had taken an eight point lead on the strength of four three-pointers. EC’s zone, dependent on good rotation to take away the outside shot had failed them.
Second Quarter MV 12 – EC 3
Starting the quarter – Nick Frasco, Rick Jared, Omar Hazimah, Dixon
Maumee Valley switched over to its 2-3 matchup zone; EC stayed in its base.
The quarter opened with Omar Hazimah doing his best Henry Beausejour imitation, driving the baseline for a two pointer. Dave Brown returned to the lineup, stole the ball and made a 7 foot floater on the break. EC Coach Dave Regnier sensed things getting out of hand and called time with 5:32 left.
MV switched back to man, and expanded its rotation with Daniel Brandon and Parker Bayer seeing second quarter action. The Hawks continued to extend their lead with strong defense all around. Dixon created mayhem for the EC offense as he drew a charging call from a Warrior guard on a drive to the basket. The visitors could not get any offensive flow going and only garnered one shot on the majority of their possessions. Several Hawks scored on fast break points, running on every rebound and stolen ball.
With 1:05 left, MV ran the clock down until EC fouled Dave with 10.6 seconds left. He made both ends and the half ended with Maumee Valley ahead 30-13.
It was the most complete half played to date by the home team with pressure all over the court.
Third Quarter MV 13 – EC 10
Starting the quarter – original starting five
MV began the quarter in zone, as did EC.
MV continued to have its way on both ends of the floor, beginning the quarter with a fast break which Dixon converted off a Rick Deichert pass. Early in the quarter, Julius would return and become the offensive force in the second half.
During the quarter, MV’s conditioning also paid dividends. Despite EC playing the game in zone 95% of the evening, MV was tiring the Warriors out with the running game.
Our video highlights tonight are from the third quarter and feature baskets by Jonathan, Julius and Rick.
Play was back and forth near the end of the quarter and at the 75% mark, MV was ahead 43-23.
Fourth Quarter – EC 16 – MV 13
Starting the quarter – original starting five
MV’s starting rotation stayed in for the first four minutes of the quarter and dominated play. Julius hit a three pointer from the top of the key at the 6:00 mark. Rick fired a 12 foot jumper from the paint at 5:13.
But the best play of the quarter occurred at the 4:12 mark, when Rick fired a fast-break pass from about 30 feet on the right hand side to a streaking Julius Turner who caught it at full speed at the left-hand block and effortlessly finished at the hoop for the evening’s exclamation point.
At 3:51, the starters exited with a 52-25 lead. Play finished with the Hawks winning 56-39.
Final Game Thoughts
Any fear of a letdown was unfounded this evening. The Hawks came prepared to play and gave the winter homecoming crowd a big time show. If anything, the big Ottawa Hills win last Friday increased the Blue and White’s confidence. It was the most aggressively played game of the season.
In five games now, Maumee Valley has had five different players score in double figures at least once – Rick, Dave, Jared, Julius and Jonathan. Tough to stop, eh?
Scoring
And now for the happy totals. Rick Deichert scored 9 in the first quarter, and then added another six along the way to finish with 15 points for the Hawks. Julius Turner had 13 against his former mates and Dave Brown finished with 11. Jared Sturt had 6 for the Hawks, Jonathan Kruger contributed 5, Dixon Stoddard 4 and Omar Hazimah scored 2 on a baseline drive which made it on to the Channel 13 highlight reel Tuesday evening.
In Scores of Other Games…
While MV was cruising, Ottawa Hills traveled to Toledo Christian and came away with a 58-47 win.
After round 1 of the TAAC-favorite round robin, nothing is settled. Not only are all three front runners 1-1 against the others, all three wins came on opponents’ home courts (MV won at OH, TC won at MV, OH won at TC). Round two takes place between January 29 and February 4, 2011, as the home teams will try to hold serve this time.
It’s a good time to be in the TAAC. Good competition and exciting games.
Next up
MV will play before perhaps the biggest crowd in school history as they take on the Fighting Irish of Toledo Central Catholic at the Huntington Center Monday December 27 at 2pm. Tickets are available from school (contact Mr. Fish) or at the gate the day of the game. No broadcast schedule has been announced yet, but anticipate BCSN / 106.5FM and/or AM 1230 coverage of the game.
