MV 36 - Toledo Christian 28 District Championship - Quick Summary
Maumee Valley completed an unprecedented triple sweep of both
of its main TAAC rivals Friday evening, coming from behind to defeat Toledo
Christian 36 – 28 at Lakota High School. The win gave Coach Jim Robinson his
first District Championship in 11 career tries. There were hugs all around
after the game as the Hawks cut the nets down for the third time in 14 days, and also claimed 3-0 season records against both TC and Ottawa Hills.

Rick Deichert and Dave Brown led the Hawks with 12 points each. Jared start had eight points, Julius Turner had three huge free throws down the stretch, and Dixon Stoddard had one.
Thus the Hawks 20th straight win propels them to the regional semifinal to be held at BGSU’s Stroh Center this coming Tuesday. Maumee Valley will face the 21 - 3 Arlington Red Devils from the Blanchard Valley conference. MV and Arlington play the first game of a doubleheader at 6:15, with the nightcap featuring Edgerton versus Colonel Crawford.
It sure didn't look like a championship night early on. TC
jumped out to a 10 – 6 lead at the end of one. Coach Dave McWhinnie's Eagles continued
their deliberate pace in the second half as well and extended their lead by
three more points, going to the locker room with a 19 – 12 lead. If not for Dave Brown's determined play in
the second quarter Toledo Christian would have led by more.
TC even made the first basket of the second half, and held a
nine point lead at that point. But the Hawks applied half court pressure
defense on the Eagle guards and began to force turnovers. Rick Deichert also
chose that moment to get hot, firing in eight third quarter points including two
three point shots with a defender’s hand right in his face. MV won the quarter
12 – 4, taking a one point lead into the final frame.
The pressure continued to wear on the Eagles, and their hot
hand the first half evaded them. Jared Sturt made two big baskets in the early
part of the quarter to stretch the blue and White's lead to four points, 29 –
25. TC was forced to begin fouling and the Hawks made their shots down the
stretch. MV's lead eventually stretched out to eight points by game’s end.

MV 43 - TC 42 - Quick Summary
The Hawks shot out to another double digit lead then watched it disappear against the Toledo Christian Eagles last night. This time the script allowed MV to be the heros, as they held on for a one point victory. The Hawks' free throw demons continue to haunt them, as they were 6-17 from the line.

Setting the Table
So often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains

Like the Green Bears of Ottawa Hills, the Toledo Christian Eagles have appeared to be an insurmountable obstacle for Maumee Valley. For the past ten years, seeing TC on the schedule basically meant wondering if the loss would be by 30 or more. More often than not the answer to that question was yes.
Over the past three years, this has changed. To be sure, there weren’t many Division I teams that could handle the great TC clubs of ’05-09, which featured the five starters who played every game from freshman year until their 2009 graduation. That was a special group of basketball players.
Now over the past two years a change has been coming. It almost happened last year, but TC’s Nick Rightnowar tore out and stomped on the collective hearts of all Hawk fans last year with his game winning three from the bleachers as time expired. And again in December, the Blue and White nearly crested the summit but ran out of oxygen as Rick Deichert’s three-ball to send the game to overtime left his hands about 0.2 seconds too late.
In a way, this prelude is a tribute to the Toledo Christian basketball program. During every step of the Hawks' development, the TC basketball program stood out as a measuring stick. The Hawks saw them in the Whitmer and Central Catholic summer leagues, and it was there that MV experienced how the Eagles learned the toughness necessary to stay with City League teams. When Coach Robinson talks about discipline and execution, one only has to look northeast on the Anthony Wayne Trail and think about that TAAC standard, the TC 1-3-1 zone. And there are other things, the fan passion, the commitment and the insistence of adhering to standards that makes the TC program worthy of respect.
But if Glenn Frey and company were on hand this night, they might have noted that Maumee Valley finally found the key and fully shed the chains of despair against the TAAC upper-echelon.
Game Summary
Saturday January 29, 2011 at the TC gym, Maumee Valley snapped a multi-year drought and defeated the TC Eagles 47-46 in overtime.
The Hawks were down 23-12 at the half, shooting a paltry 23% from the field. But they found their game in the second half, pounding the ball inside and taking advantage of TC foul trouble late.
MV played as much press as TC this evening, something that would have been unthinkable a year or two ago.
Free throws were key down the stretch and MV was up for the challenge. Unofficially, the Hawks were 15-20 at the line this evening, including the game winner by Dave Brown late in OT.
TC's David Westmeyer took the last shot at the buzzer but it bounced off the right side of the rim, and it was the Hawks turn to celebrate.
First Quarter TC 14 – MV 6
Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Dixon Stoddard (’12) and Jonathan Krueger (’12)
TC started out in its base 1-3-1 defense. MV, which had enjoyed much success against TC with its hybrid 2-3 zone began with that defense – the first time the Hawks had opened in zone all season.
At the outset, Jared played tall and strong. He scored the first two points off a Dixon miss and drew a foul from David Westmeyer at 5:43. Jared made both and MV led 4-0.
TC countered with their press and although there were no Hawk miscues handling the ball, they missed their next two chances and TC tied the game at four apiece.
Rick made the next basket for the Hawks and at the next stoppage – the 4:14 mark, Julius entered the game.
The Hawks were overplaying the ball frequently in the quarter but couldn’t get to the passing lanes quickly enough. A two, and two three pointers later, TC was ahead 12-6. The Eagles were 3-4 early from three point range, and Coach Robinson called time to cool things down.
He also made a strategic decision to switch into man defense, and MV stayed there for the rest of the evening. TC had obviously learned their lessons from the first game. Here's an example from the first half.
Unfortunately one thing that also was cool was Maumee Valley’s shooting. The Hawks kept missing early and following a few unfruitful possessions for both teams, TC scored on an inbounds play to make it 14-6. They would get the ball back for the last possession but did not convert.
The quarter ended with the home team up by eight. It seemed like the lead could have been bigger.
Second Quarter TC 9 – MV 6
Starting the quarter – Dave, Rick, Jared, Julius, Dixon
It looked as if MV would start in rousing fashion; they pulled a rebound and took off on the fast break, but Julius was rung up for offensive foul. The MV coaching was not pleased with the call.
MV now initiated the pressure and began to press. They generated a turnover, then after a missed shot Julius was called for his second foul of the evening with 6:23 left.
The veteran refereeing crew, which had let the players go up this point, began to call a series of off-ball fouls to tone down the physicality. Dixon was called for a foul, then after an Eagle basket extending the lead to 16-6, Dixon was fouled himself and made one of two shots.
TC held the ball for a thirty second stretch and then MV overplayed another pass, leading to another Eagle three pointer on a wide open look. MV missed on its subsequent possession and TC made another shot + 1, missing on the free throw, but extending its lead to 21-7.
At 3:03, Rick was fouled hard (ouch) but got off the canvas and make one of two free throws. David Westmeyer was then called for his third foul with about 2:40 remaining, and was pulled by Coach Dave McWhinnie.
MV scored next on a home run pass against an Eagle press to make it 21-10 TC. Rick was hit hard again at the 2:30 mark and Nick Frasco entered the game with 2:24 left. Both Nick and Dave missed shots late in the second, while TC made yet another three pointer.
Dave Brown cashed in on the last possession, a driving basket with 1.2 seconds left.
At the half the score was Eagles 23 – Hawks 12. Maumee Valley was 4-17 (23%) from the floor in the first 16 minutes.
Third Quarter MV 16 – TC 9.
Starting the quarter – Initial game starters
I had a chance to speak with Coach Robinson after the game. He relayed that the locker room was very businesslike at halftime. No emotional speeches, just some adjustments and a goal of cutting the hosts’ lead to six by quarter-end.
Meanwhile, TC’s Senior forward David Westmeyer started the quarter on the bench with his three fouls.
MV began the quarter by opening the right side for Rick to drive the hoop for a two + 1, which he missed. TC answered with an almost identical play which did result in an old-fashioned three pointer.
With the Eagles’ premier inside player on the bench, the Blue and White kept working near the cylinder. Dixon manned up with a strong move for two points.
Coach McWhinnie didn’t like what he saw and brought Westmeyer back into the game. He quickly picked up his fourth foul with 6:32 still left in the frame.
The home team had come back to earth after a stellar first half shooting performance. Both teams were held scoreless for nearly two minutes, then Jared converted on an offensive rebound to get MV within eight.
TC was still struggling offensively and called time out at 4:07 left. They scored a two pointer and got the ball back, but another of the Eagle starters, Luke Sims, was called for his third foul on the offensive end at 2:33.
It was 30-22 Eagles when Julius scored two points. Then Dixon stole a pass at the top of the key, drove the length of the court and scored, narrowing the lead to 30-26. The Hawks offense was taking advantage of the double teams on Jared to find open looks by Dixon and Julius instead of forcing passes in.
The Hawk fans were in a frenzy when TC called another time out at 1:25 to again get their bearings. And no one from the visitors’ side could complain about home cooking from the officials; the fouls stood at five against TC versus one on MV.
TC scored two, then Jared found the hoop with 34 seconds remaining for the final basket of the quarter. MV had bettered than their Coach’s request by two, cutting the TC lead to 32-28 at the end of three.
With the crowd on both ends on their feet screaming, one of Coach Robinson’s long-time friends turned to me and said ‘and now the game begins’.

Starting the quarter – Rick, Dave, Dixon, Julius and Jared
The quarter went on hold almost as quickly as it started, when TC called a time out just 22 seconds in to avoid a traveling call on a player who was falling down. Rick promptly stole the ball and at the Hawks end, Dixon scored a basket + 1 off an inbounds play.
In a sign of things to come, Dixon made the free throw. It was 32-31 TC. On the other end, Jared committed his first foul of the game at 6:55 and TC made both ends.
It was MV’s turn and Dave Brown found the right baseline open for a driving two to cut it back to 34-33.
TC then stole a page from the Robinson playbook, capitalizing on a beautiful backdoor pass for a basket and the home team led by three, 36-33. MV called time out at 5:46.
With several Eagles playing in severe foul trouble, MV went back inside to Jared for two, cutting it to 36-35.
Then TC turned it over on an errant pass. At the Hawks end, Julius made his favorite drop-step fake from the right wing and was fouled as he cruised past his defender.
Julius made both and the visitors had their first lead since early in the game.
TC started to pressure themselves on offense and again threw a pass away. On MV’s next possession, the guards held the ball as if to stall. Coach McWhinnie pulled his guards out of the 1-3-1, opening up the middle for a lob pass by Dixon to Jared for two.
The Blue and White now led by three with 2:40 to go.
The hosts called their final time out of the regular session with 2:40 to go. TC had committed nine fouls to two on MV’s part. On the ensuing possession, TC burned several seconds off the clock then missed a tough shot. Dave Brown gathered in the rebound and was fouled.
Now in the double bonus, Dave made both shots. MV enjoyed a five point lead, but not for long. This was a 10 ticket roller coaster ride; there was much more to come.
Jonathan Krueger committed his fifth foul with 1:17 to go.
TC’s Josh Whitlow then hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two.
After a MV time out, Julius was fouled with 46.8 seconds left and made one of two for a three point lead.
But again TC’s seniors rose to the challenge and came back with a three pointer. It was 42-42 with 26 seconds left.
MV held the ball for most of those 26 seconds...
...but TC slapped the ball out of bounds with 1.6 seconds remaining. Coach Robinson called a final time out and came up with this play.
The Jared putback was waived off and the teams went to a 4:00 Overtime session.
Overtime – MV 5 – TC 4
Starting the period – Rick, Dave, Jared, Julius and Dixon
Three of TCs starters were on the floor with four fouls. This would weigh heavily on the overtime period.
MV recovered the tip, but Julius was called for an offensive foul (his third) and at the TC end, Dave Brown fouled Josh Whitlow while shooting two; Whitlow made both ends and the Eagles had the early lead.
The Blue and White came right back on an entry pass to Dixon, who scored two and tied the game at 44.
Jared came up huge for the Hawksquad during the next stretch. He blocked one shot which MV recovered but could not convert, then another on a beautifully timed block from behind. Two straight TC possessions, two straight rejections.
On the second block, TC had the possession on the in-bounds, but the team rose up and forced a five second call and it was MV ball with 2:13 left.
MV methodically executed its high post offense and Jared fired a pass to Rick underneath. He was hammered going up
...and made both free throws, giving the visitors a 46-44 lead. Rick subsequently fouled David Westmeyer trying to work through a screen. Westmeyer made only the front end, but Jared stepped out of bounds going after the rebound on the missed second shot.
TC had the ball in, but another communications breakdown led to a thrown away in-bounds pass. The Hawks had the ball and a one point lead with 1:19 left but turned it over at their end.
TC spread the floor this time with a Dean Smith-esque four corners offense looking to generate a three point try. They got their chance but missed. Maumee Valley got the rebound and began to burn clock on its end. TC, realizing time was their enemy fouled Dave Brown with 28.6 seconds left.
Significantly, the foul was committed by Senior Nick Rightnowar, TC’s clutch three point shooter. It was his fifth and he was gone for the evening. Dave made one of two shots and it was 47-45 MV with 28 seconds left.
TC got the ball into their front court, called time to draw up a play, which was a Josh Whitlow drive to the basket. He was fouled, and made only one of two. It was MV ball, up by one.
The Eagles had no choice but to foul, and sent Julius to the line.
He missed both - and with 9.5 seconds to play… well, see for yourself – from two angles.

Final Game Thoughts
For a group of underclassmen, this team is showing some major league poise. They are undefeated on the road, including wins against a (then) top 10 team and a perrenial Conference power on hostile territory. In both games the Hawks came from behind for the win.
Maumee Valley was rusty in the first half after a 10-day layoff and it showed. But they didn’t lose faith and methodically cut the lead down, then came back a second time from an early deficit in the extra period.
They made their free throws down the stretch - 15 for 20 overall, and scoring 3 of their five OT points at the line.
These traits are key to success in the playoffs, where every game is an away game, the competition gets tougher with each game and free throws often decide things.
Overall, this game had a different feel from the loss in the first game, probably because the Hawks led down the stretch and it was TC trying to come from behind. And being the tough team they are, the Eagles had a chance at the end to win it and they just fell short. This was a big win for the Hawks.
It is wishful thinking to say farewell to this group of Eagles. Like the Band of the same name, I suspect a farewell tour is already in the works. The Hawks could easily see TC again in the playoffs.

The Hawks offense was taking advantage of the double teams on Jared to find open looks by Dixon and Julius instead of forcing passes in.
The Hawk fans were in a frenzy when TC called another time out at 1:25 to again get their bearings. And no one from the visitors’ side could complain about home cooking from the officials; the fouls stood at five against TC versus one on MV.
TC scored two, then Jared found the hoop with 34 seconds remaining for the final basket of the quarter. MV had bettered than their Coach’s request by two, cutting the TC lead to 32-28 at the end of three.
With the crowd on both ends on their feet screaming, one of Coach Robinson’s long-time friends turned to me and said ‘and now the game begins’.
Fourth Quarter MV 14 – TC 10
Starting the quarter – Rick, Dave, Dixon, Julius and Jared
The quarter went on hold almost as quickly as it started, when TC called a time out just 22 seconds in to avoid a traveling call on a player who was falling down. Rick promptly stole the ball and at the Hawks end, Dixon scored a basket + 1 off an inbounds play.
In a sign of things to come, Dixon made the free throw. It was 32-31 TC. On the other end, Jared committed his first foul of the game at 6:55 and TC made both ends.
It was MV’s turn and Dave Brown found the right baseline open for a driving two to cut it back to 34-33.
TC then stole a page from the Robinson playbook, capitalizing on a beautiful backdoor pass for a basket and the home team led by three, 36-33. MV called time out at 5:46.
With several Eagles playing in severe foul trouble, MV went back inside to Jared for two, cutting it to 36-35.
Then TC turned it over on an errant pass. At the Hawks end, Julius made his favorite drop-step fake from the right wing and was fouled as he cruised past his defender.
Julius made both and the visitors had their first lead since early in the game.
TC started to pressure themselves on offense and again threw a pass away. On MV’s next possession, the guards held the ball as if to stall. Coach McWhinnie pulled his guards out of the 1-3-1, opening up the middle for a lob pass by Dixon to Jared for two.
The Blue and White now led by three with 2:40 to go.
The hosts called their final time out of the regular session with 2:40 to go. TC had committed nine fouls to two on MV’s part. On the ensuing possession, TC burned several seconds off the clock then missed a tough shot. Dave Brown gathered in the rebound and was fouled.
Now in the double bonus, Dave made both shots. MV enjoyed a five point lead, but not for long. This was a 10 ticket roller coaster ride; there was much more to come.
Jonathan Krueger committed his fifth foul with 1:17 to go.
TC’s Josh Whitlow then hit a three pointer to cut the lead to two.
After a MV time out, Julius was fouled with 46.8 seconds left and made one of two for a three point lead.
But again TC’s seniors rose to the challenge and came back with a three pointer. It was 42-42 with 26 seconds left.
MV held the ball for most of those 26 seconds...
...but TC slapped the ball out of bounds with 1.6 seconds remaining. Coach Robinson called a final time out and came up with this play.
The Jared putback was waived off and the teams went to a 4:00 Overtime session.
Overtime – MV 5 – TC 4
Starting the period – Rick, Dave, Jared, Julius and Dixon
Three of TCs starters were on the floor with four fouls. This would weigh heavily on the overtime period.
MV recovered the tip, but Julius was called for an offensive foul (his third) and at the TC end, Dave Brown fouled Josh Whitlow while shooting two; Whitlow made both ends and the Eagles had the early lead.
The Blue and White came right back on an entry pass to Dixon, who scored two and tied the game at 44.
Jared came up huge for the Hawksquad during the next stretch. He blocked one shot which MV recovered but could not convert, then another on a beautifully timed block from behind. Two straight TC possessions, two straight rejections.
On the second block, TC had the possession on the in-bounds, but the team rose up and forced a five second call and it was MV ball with 2:13 left.
MV methodically executed its high post offense and Jared fired a pass to Rick underneath. He was hammered going up
...and made both free throws, giving the visitors a 46-44 lead. Rick subsequently fouled David Westmeyer trying to work through a screen. Westmeyer made only the front end, but Jared stepped out of bounds going after the rebound on the missed second shot.
TC had the ball in, but another communications breakdown led to a thrown away in-bounds pass. The Hawks had the ball and a one point lead with 1:19 left but turned it over at their end.
TC spread the floor this time with a Dean Smith-esque four corners offense looking to generate a three point try. They got their chance but missed. Maumee Valley got the rebound and began to burn clock on its end. TC, realizing time was their enemy fouled Dave Brown with 28.6 seconds left.
Significantly, the foul was committed by Senior Nick Rightnowar, TC’s clutch three point shooter. It was his fifth and he was gone for the evening. Dave made one of two shots and it was 47-45 MV with 28 seconds left.
TC got the ball into their front court, called time to draw up a play, which was a Josh Whitlow drive to the basket. He was fouled, and made only one of two. It was MV ball, up by one.
The Eagles had no choice but to foul, and sent Julius to the line.
He missed both - and with 9.5 seconds to play… well, see for yourself – from two angles.

Final Game Thoughts
For a group of underclassmen, this team is showing some major league poise. They are undefeated on the road, including wins against a (then) top 10 team and a perrenial Conference power on hostile territory. In both games the Hawks came from behind for the win.
Maumee Valley was rusty in the first half after a 10-day layoff and it showed. But they didn’t lose faith and methodically cut the lead down, then came back a second time from an early deficit in the extra period.
They made their free throws down the stretch - 15 for 20 overall, and scoring 3 of their five OT points at the line.
These traits are key to success in the playoffs, where every game is an away game, the competition gets tougher with each game and free throws often decide things.
Overall, this game had a different feel from the loss in the first game, probably because the Hawks led down the stretch and it was TC trying to come from behind. And being the tough team they are, the Eagles had a chance at the end to win it and they just fell short. This was a big win for the Hawks.
It is wishful thinking to say farewell to this group of Eagles. Like the Band of the same name, I suspect a farewell tour is already in the works. The Hawks could easily see TC again in the playoffs.

Boys' JV Beats Toledo Christian 43-29, Advances to 11-1 for the Season

After taking care of business in the classroom for finals week, the boys' JV returned to the hardwood on Saturday night and faced the Toledo Christian Eagles in one of their best played games of the season. The Hawks welcomed Caleb Willhight into the line up for the first time this season and beat the Eagles 43-29 with really great play on both ends of the floor.
The Hawks came out strong and ready to play in the first quarter. Good execution of their offense and tenacious defense bolstered the Hawks to a 20-4 lead over the Eagles by the end of the first quarter. The crowd was treated to great all around play by the Hawks - great passing, solid play in the post, good guard play, and solid defensive play that held the Eagles to 4 points in the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Hawks' offense cooled off a bit as they would only find the basket once, scoring just two points in the quarter. However, their defensive intensity continued as they held the Eagles to just two points in the quarter. The Hawks ended the first half leading the Eagles 22-6.
The third quarter brought with it more of the same from the Hawks; good defense created a few fast break opportunities and contained the Eagles, great passing and good execution of the offense enabled players to knock down shots. The Hawks ended the third quarter leading the Eagles 34-15.
In the final quarter of the game, the momentum stayed with the Hawks and their solid performance continued. Great passing, solid play in the post and by the guards and great defense were the keys to the game for the Hawks.
Hawks fans were treated to sound basketball and another great effort by the entire team. We hope the same focus and tenacity will be reflected in all of your grades on final exams as well!

The Hawks were down 23-12 at the half, shooting a paltry 23% from the field. But they found their game in the second half, pounding the ball inside and taking advantage of TC foul trouble late. MV played as much press as TC this evening, something that would have been unthinkable a year or two ago.
Free throws were key down the stretch and MV was up for the challenge. Unofficially, the Hawks were 15-20 at the line this evening, including the game winner by Dave Brown late in OT.

Since defeating Maumee Valley 30-27 at the Varsity Gym, the Eagles have gone 6-2, losing back to back games to Van Buren and Ottawa Hills in December. They went on a tear thereafter, currently riding a five game winning streak, including four TAAC wins. Overall, TC is 8-3; 6-1 in the TAAC.
Statistically, TC's top scorers include David Westmeyer (11.1 ppg / 10th in TAAC), Nick Rightnour (10.6 / 13th) and Josh Whitlow (7.9 / 16th).
Westmeyer averages 5.3 rebounds per game, good for 9th place in the TAAC.
TC features their trademark 1-3-1 defense but also loves to press. They will need to slow down the Hawks inside game. This was their demise against Ottawa Hills first time around.

TC girls 50 – MV 35 - 1.22.11 at the Varsity Gym – Progress
Starting the game - Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Cammie Lonsway (‘14), Genna Danes (‘12), Karla Luketic (‘11) and Kristin Bigelow (’12)
Several of the Hawks were hampered by illness and saw limited action throughout the afternoon.
First Quarter - First 3:10: TC 4 – MV 4 / Last 4:50: TC 12 – MV 4
Early play was marked by turnovers on both ends. Kristin scored the first two baskets for the Hawks and they were tied.
The Hawks fell behind during a stretch of breakdowns against the TC press – two flurries of two baskets each during the middle and end of the quarters. In between, there was this score by Genna
And this video is offered to illustrate the title of this story. In prior years, MV would not have been nearly this aggressive in going after rebounds and loose balls. Things are changing for the Hawks, and if they can play like this for 32 minutes straight, they can win more often than not.
Delaney made the last two points of the quarter for the Hawks from the line.
Yazmin AbdelKarim and Jordan Baker saw considerable action during the first quarter.
Second Quarter – TC 12 – MV 12
TC started the scoring with a two pointer, but MV roared right back with a top-of-the-key three pointer from Genna and a runner from Kristin for two
The Eagles were pressing the entire game and was substituting freely with a nine girl rotation. MV fared well though with better than average success breaking the pressure. Still, TC scored the next five points of the quarter.
Kristin scored twice more in the quarter, including this long two pointer
...and it was TC which called a time out at 2:06 to straighten out their defense with the score TC 26 - MV 18.
Third quarter – MV 8 – TC 7
Now there’s a scoring line you haven’t seen for a few years.
TC started the quarter in Man defense, MV played its stock 2-3 zone.
The Eagles’ coach kept her team in the locker room until the last minute, seemingly frustrated at her team’s inability to extend their first quarter lead. But whatever offensive instructions she gave her players fell on deaf ears. Both teams started out slowly and it wasn’t until under four minutes left in the quarter that TC scored first.
But the Hawks returned serve, Kristin first drawing a foul at 3:32, making one, then Delaney made a basket + 1:
…which she made. As Delaney was at the line, the TC fans were cheering for the miss – having the visiting crowd anxious this late in the game was indicative of the Hawks’ play in the quarter.
MV came out of the free throw in a press themselves and got the ball back after Genna blocked a shot. Kristin got to the line and made one of two. TC called another time out with 2:29 left and the score TC 33 – MV 25. Play continued and TC made a two pointer to lead by 10, but Maumee Valley scored the last three points of the quarter on three free throws, two by Kristin and one by Delaney.
The Hawks had won the quarter and were down by seven, 35-28.

The hill would be too steep for the Hawks this quarter. TC switched up their press from zone to man and it caused confusion and a flurry of quick baskets for the visitors. To break things up, Coach Mussery called a press of his own at the 4:23 mark, and forced a few turnovers. MV broke into the scoring column late in the game on a Kristin steal and basket.
At the 1:53 mark with an 18 point lead, TC emptied the bench. Maumee Valley scored five of the game’s last seven points and the game ended with TC up by 15.

Kristin hit for 24 during the afternoon. Delaney (6) and Genna (5) were the other Hawk scorers.
Summary
One quarter at a time. That’s a fair measure of improvement for the young Hawks team. In this game they won a quarter and tied one against the Blade Division IV fifth ranked team. This game was significantly better played than the Hawks game at TC.
Two tough stretches especially in the fourth quarter when the Hawks were affected by illness did the home team in this day. But for the majority of the game this young team played hard and equal to the task. Coaches Dennis Mussery and Brian Lisk have significantly improved their team’s game since the beginning of the season.
With finals out of the way, the basketball doesn’t get any easier for MV as they travel to Ottawa Hills Friday evening for a 6pm game.

Watched Ottawa Hills vs. Toledo Christian on TV - comments
Nothing too insightful here, just some impressions.
1. I didn't realize how small the TC gym was. Their press to a great extent is build around that floor. There's less space to cover. It will be interesting to see how they adjust in their new building.
2. Ottawa Hills won that game down the stretch at the line. Impressive free throw shooting by the Bears. Conversely, they almost gave the game away in the fourth quarter with a lot of quick posessions. Coach Lindsay must have been pulling his hair out.
3. David Westmeyer and Andrew Jamieson were the best players on the court that evening. Although Josh Whitlow played a big part in the Eagles' comeback with three 3-pointers in the second half. He was money from the left hand corner.
4. OH played much of the game without Lucas Janowicz - first due to foul trouble, then because OH wanted ball handlers in the game.
5. This year anyway, OH lives by the fade away jumper. TC lives by the three.
6. TC thrives on a fast paced game. They are vulnerable to a good inside game.
7. Note for next year - TC currently starts five seniors, OH starts three.
8. Coach Stan Joplin is a good analyst.

TC girls 52 – MV 28 – at Toledo Christian – 12.16.10
Starting five: Kristin Bigelow (‘12), Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Jazmine Aldridge-Brownlee (‘12), Genna Danes (‘12) and Wesley Flaum (‘12) - also seeing action: Yazmine AbdulKarim ('11), Jordan Baker ('14), Karla Luketic ('11) and Cammie Lonsway ('14)
The girls lost to TC Thursday evening, moving their record to 2-3 on the season.
Some nights are tougher than others. This was one tough night.
The Hawks were stymied early on by the TC press and got behind early. Part way through the first quarter, the Hawks made a few adjustments and began to beat the press, but by the second quarter, the game was out of reach. One of the Hawks first half highlights was this jumper by Kristin with four second left.
The second half was much more competitive and the Hawks outscored the Eagles 23-17. MV got into a more aggressive defensive posture and ran an effective half court trap out of their 2-3 zone.

It doesn’t get any easier for MV on Saturday when they take on the Ottawa Hills Green Bears at the Varsity Gym. Get over to school tomorrow and cheer on your Maumee Valley Hawks.
The girls lost to TC Thursday evening, moving their record to 2-3 on the season.
Some nights are tougher than others. This was one tough night.
The Hawks were stymied early on by the TC press and got behind early. Part way through the first quarter, the Hawks made a few adjustments and began to beat the press, but by the second quarter, the game was out of reach. One of the Hawks first half highlights was this jumper by Kristin with four second left.
The second half was much more competitive and the Hawks outscored the Eagles 23-17. MV got into a more aggressive defensive posture and ran an effective half court trap out of their 2-3 zone.

Girls travel to TC tonight at 6:00 - note time change
The Girls hit the (Anthony Wayne) trail tonight to face the Eagles. The school calendar lists a 7:30 PM start time, which implies no JV game.

Chapter 3 - The Flight of the Muse TC 30– MV 27 – 12.14.10 at Maumee Valley – Boys Game Summary

Using the above diagram and simple powers of higher mathematics, one can quickly deduce that it’s thirteen feet, nine inches from the foul line to the center of the 18” diameter basket in a regulation high school basketball court.
Unfortunately, on some nights the free throw line might as well be 55 feet away. Such was the case last evening as the Hawks went 6-17 from the line. The free throw shooting Muse present at last week’s Monclova Christian game, when the Hawks went 8-10, decided to turn its back on the home team this evening.
On the other hand, Maumee Valley did go 1-for-1 from the actual 55 foot line this evening, sort of…
Game Summary
In a defensive struggle, Toledo Christian outlasted MV 30-27 at the Varsity Gym. The Hawks had two chances to pull ahead or tie the game at the end. Rick Deichert made a three-quarter court 3 pointer with seven seconds to go and another three ball at the buzzer, but he released both shots just after the whistle had blown (verified after watching the video) and neither shot counted.
Both teams experienced long offensive droughts. In the second quarter, MV held the Eagles to two points; TC returned the favor in the third, blanking the Blue and White until a three pointer by Julius Turner with four seconds left.
Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Dixon Stoddard (’12) and Jonathan Krueger (’12)
First Quarter – TC 11 – MV 8
Maumee Valley started the game in man defense; TC was in man as well, but quickly switched to its 1-3-1 matchup zone. TC got off to a quick 4-0 start in the first three minutes of play with two layups off foul-line screens, but the Hawks tightened up on D. Rick opened the scoring with a basket from the elbow and the Hawks actively clogged the passing lanes inside. Jared Sturt had two steals early, but TC continued to score inside. Dixon Stoddard was very active underneath with several rebounds at both ends of the floor.
Nick Frasco came in for Rick with 53 seconds left and it was Maumee Valley which put on the first press. TC scored with 2 seconds left in the half to take the first quarter lead.
Little did the crowd know that this would be the highest scoring frame of the evening.
Second Quarter – MV 7 – TC 2
Starters – Rick, Dave, Jared, Dixon, Julius Turner
Julius started the second quarter and had an immediate impact with a strong drive to the basket, drawing a foul and making both ends at the line. Shortly thereafter, he made a great move inside the paint for another two points.
On the defensive end MV switched to its 2-3 zone, which immediately slowed the Eagles’ attack to a crawl. TC was stymied in their efforts to work the ball inside and good work by the Hawks on ball rotation kept the opponents’ outside shooting to a minimum. As the hosts became more aggressive in their zone, Jared aggressively defended around the basket, blocking a short attempt and a 15 footer from the baseline.
Rick ended the quarter with a driving layup. The Hawks were up at the end of the half 15-13.
TC scored a pair on a couple of singles, a passed ball and a double down the line, plating the two runners on base. Oh sorry, I was just dreaming about warmer weather for a second. Game time temperature was 11 degrees.
Third Quarter TC 8 – MV 3
Starting the quarter: Same as Q2.
TC came out of the locker room determined to execute better ball rotation on the perimeter. They got an early look, but could not convert. Play sped up early in the quarter, but this didn’t lead to an increased scoring pace. Play was ragged.
MV had extreme difficulty shooting due to tough defense by the Eagles, managing only three attempts in the frame before Julius Turner fired in a three from the top of the key with four seconds left to avert the shutout.
TC headed into the fourth quarter with a 21-18 lead.
Fourth Quarter MV 9 – TC 9
Starting the quarter: same as Q2 and 3.
The final stanza opened with a pyrotechnical display. Rick grabbed a defensive rebound and started a break down court. He fired a sharp pass to Dixon who was fouled hard on the shot attempt. A TC forward argued the call too strenuously and was charged with a technical.
However, the Blue and White were only able to convert one of the four free throws. On the ensuing possession, Jared drove from the high post and converted at the basket. The Hawks had squared it at 21.
Rick then scored off a well designed in-bounds play to pull the Hawks ahead, and scoring continued back and forth. Julius made one of two foul shots, and then Dave Brown made an eight-footer from the left baseline off a great pass by Dixon from the right wing. The Hawks were up three but TC again returned fire with a three pointer to tie it again. Following a an MV free throw, TC went ahead 28-26 on a Nick Rightnowar trey.
Jared returned to the line after being hacked on a shot, and converted one to cut the lead in half.
The Hawks had been in the bonus for much of the fourth quarter but could not convert throughout the frame. Conversely, MVs clean play in the eyes of the officials would now place additional pressure on the team at the 1:16 mark. With only two fouls against them, Maumee Valley had to go into aggressive defense / quick foul mode. Play for the next several seconds occurred mostly between the three point circles with TC taking the ball out and MV immediately fouling. TC retained its lead and ball possession deep into the game.
But the Hawks created some chances near the end. A steal gave MV the ball with 21 seconds left and down 1, but a turnover led to a foul and two converted free throws by TC. It was 30-27 with a few fireworks left.
With 6.9 seconds left, MV inbounded the ball to Rick Deichert, who fired a 55 footer toward the hoop and nailed it – to no avail.
The referee had blown his whistle for an on-the-floor foul committed against Rick. He went to the line with 2.3 seconds to go in the double bonus trying to make the first then miss the second to generate a tying put-back attempt.
PS - I turned the Flipcam off and didn't capture the shot - what a knucklehead!
Rick missed the first end then deliberately missed the second for a miracle three try – which he got off a Jared Sturt rebound – and made – again unfortunately, just after the whistle blew.
The Hawks went down to defeat 30-27.
Final Game Thoughts
Statistically the game was lost at the line. MV went 6-17; 4-11 in the fourth quarter. TC was 4-6 including the last two points of the game.
It was a tough loss for the Hawks. The team’s own expectations are higher this year and this one had to hurt some.
Conversely, Maumee Valley was within three points of tying the game at the end and had several chances to win. Closing out a game like this will be another milestone in the team’s development. Fayette was one thing, but one of your two main conference competitors is another.
Finally for those who have followed MV basketball for several years, it should be noted that tonight’s game was clearly a matchup of peer vs. peer. Gone are the days of the early TC press, the 10-20 point deficit and the ensuing ugly night. In fact, contrary to my game prediction, TC did not put the press on once during the evening.
Fortunately this is early season basketball and other opportunities will avail themselves as the season progresses.
Finally, we return to the Muses. The Roman scholar Varro spoke of three. MV will surely re-acquaint themselves this week one of them; Melete, the muse of practice, at the charity stripe this week.

This is the toughest stretch of the Hawks’ season. The gauntlet continues as they travel to Ottawa Hills Friday night to face the TAAC preseason favorites. The JV’s look to go 4-0 with their usual 6PM start time.
Later on, it’s Emmanuel Christian at home on the 21st, then the big Huntington Center matchup on December 27 at 2pm vs. Toledo Central Catholic.

Boys' JV Beats Toledo Christian, Advances to 3-0 for Season

In the first league game of the season, the boys' JV was victorious over the Toledo Christian Eagles, beating the Eagles 50 to 39. The Hawks won behind superb play and a hot shooting hand by guard AJ King who finished the night with a season high 28 points.
There was not a part of the floor that didn't agree with King; AJ missed only a hand full of shots in roughly four quarters of play. AJ for 3, AJ drives to the basket, AJ hits a jumper and gets and AND 1, you get the picture.
While the game started out a little slow and the score was close through the 3rd quarter with the Hawks up by just four points, 16 to 12, to begin the 3rd quarter. AJ hit a three from the top of the key to move the Hawks to 19 and followed with a second three to advance the Hawks to 22-14. The Hawks then entered into a period of a few fouls and turnovers, but never relinquished their lead ending the quarter leading the Eagles by 13 points up 32-19.
Free throws allowed the Eagles to continue to hang around in the fourth quarter, pulling them within 8 of the Hawks with 4 minutes remaining in the 4th.
But the Hawks prevailed by executing their offense, playing team defense and hitting free throws down the stretch. In one sequence, Collins takes the inbound pass from Woodward and hit for 2. In another sequence, after a missed free throw, Collins chases down the rebound and passes the ball to Woodard, who dishes to Collins as he cuts to the basket along the baseline. Collins then passes to Okeke right under the basket, but the rim is not kind and the ball bounces out. In the next sequence the Hawks set up their offense and with the 5th and final pass, Woodard fakes to the outside, loses his man and goes back down the baseline for 2. On a defensive sequence, a steal by Collins led to a layup with an AND1 opportunity for AJ.
Marcus Knabbs put the icing on the cake, hitting 2 free throws to put the Hawks up 50 -36 with just a few seconds left in the game.
Up next, the Hawks hit the road in another league game on Friday against the Ottawa Hills Bears. Go Hawks!
