Hawks picked third in pre-season TAAC poll

MV 42 - OH 39 - Hawks win Sectional Title - Quick Summary
Maumee Valley clinched its first Sectional title in over 10 years Friday March 2, 2012 at Eastwood High School, defeating the Ottawa Hills Green Bears 42-39.
It was a tremendous atmosphere at Eastwood, the gym nearly filled to capacity in the first of a two game double header. Ottawa Hills stymied the Hawks most all evening with their 2-3 zone, and the lead changed hands five times during the evening. OH led early on the strength of their front line players, Lucas Janowicz and RJ Coil and Geoffery Beans. In fact, the Bears outshot MV from both the three point arc and the free throw line.
However, the Hawks used tough defense, forcing enough turnovers to give MV (an unofficial) 37-25 shot advantage. MV took the lead down the stretch on the strength of two clutch drives by Julius Turner. Here's the second, which made the BCSN list of top plays for the night...
And with 4:00 remaining in the game and a four point lead, the Blue and White ran the clock out - not without OH having their chances to tie - right down to the last play of the game...
...and at the end, Maumee Valley cut the nets down for a Sectional Crown.
It was a great win for Coach Jim Robinson, who broke a long playoff win drought this evening. It was also a rare 3-0 season sweep for the Hawks, achieving one of the more difficult goals in basketball.
Scoring for the Hawks - Jared Sturt with 11, Rick Deichert and Jon Krueger 8, Julius Turner 6, Dave Brown 5 and Dixon Stoddard 4. Caleb Willhight also saw action on the night.
The Hawks now move to the District round at Lakota High School in Kansas, Ohio, where they face Fostoria Sectional #2 seed Tiffin Calvert out of the Midland Athletic League Tuesday March 6, at 8:00 pm.
Congratulations also to the Toledo Christian Eagles, who defeated the Gibsonburg Golden Bears 45-40 in the second game. TC moves on to face New Riegel in Game 1 at Lakota - tip-off at 6:15pm.

Ottawa Hills Game 2 preview
MV faces off against Ottawa Hills tonight on the Bears' home court. MV won there last time out in a big upset capped by this Jon Krueger dagger...
...defeating the then State Number 7 ranked team 45 - 42. That was a coming of age game for the current group, but the Bears learned from it and got their revenge in the second game.
Will OH repeat the pattern this year? If so, the hopes will rest on their height advantage comprising the front wall of Lucas Janowicz, Geoffery Beans, RJ Coil and AJ King.
Ottawa Hills comes into the game with a 7-7 record, but have won four out of their last five contests, all four wins coming courtesy of TAAC opponents. The Bears play a disciplined game this year, scoring an average of 48 points per game while allowing 47. Maumee Valley won the first game of the 2011-12 season by a 51 - 39 count.
The OH student section should be in rare form tomorrow, given the quality interaction of the previous game. But MV will be ignoring the crowd, given the referees' strict shushing ban imposed over the last weeks.
Make sure to get out to the Village tomorrow for the game. JV's, as usual start at 6pm, and varsity around 7:30.

Chapter 25 – Trading Places – MV 51 – Ottawa Hills 39 at the Varsity Gym – December 16, 2011 - Game Story
Setting the Table
When we last left these opponents, they had finished polishing each other off at each others’ home courts during the 2010-11 season. The second game would prove costly for the Hawks as the Green Bears gained revenge for the Hawks’ win in the opener and clinched the TAAC Championship in a sold out game in the Valley.
Last year’s Ottawa Hills team was led by all-TAAC players JJ Buckey and Andrew Jamieson. The departure of these two seniors left a big hole in the Bears’ ball handling and press breaking ability. To date, opposing teams have taken aim at these holes and OH’s lack of a true point guard. The Bears have been susceptible to pressure as far back as the Central Catholic summer league. While the Villagers came into the contest at 2-1, they had just come off a eye-opening 16 point loss at home against Cardinal Stritch, an early press being their demise.
Adding to the intrigue of the game was the transfer of one Atmore James King Jr. from Maumee Valley to Ottawa Hills. AJ, one of the nicest guys you’d ever want to meet, was now showing off his 6’2” swing man skills in a Green and White uniform. His debut at his former school was much anticipated by both fan bases, evidenced on one side by an OH pre-game spirit video AJ being kidnapped by:
• the ‘4’8”, 85 lbs.’ Dave Brown
• Cello Playing Rick Deichert and
• Jersey Rippin’ Kristin Bigelow
The HawkSquad’s faithful student section would counter with a greeting of its own during pre-game intros.
But the oddest feel of the night was the sense that Maumee Valley was on top of this long-storied rivalry for the moment, following years of series domination by their neighbors to the north. For once in a blue moon, it was the Green Bears seeking an upset at the Varsity Gym.
It was to be an evening of Trading Places.
Game Summary
HawkNation was out in full force last night to watch their team defeat the Green Bears 51-39 at the Valley in front of a sold-out house and BCSN television audience. With the win, Maumee Valley righted their ship in TAAC play, finishing 2-1 in the three-games-in-seven-nights gauntlet of Gibsonburg, TC and OH. The back to back wins against TC and OH are another milestone for MV, their first such set in many a year.
Ottawa Hills has a big front line, but if you can't get the ball into that group, they can't do much damage. MV used full court pressure and forced 22 OH turnovers during the contest. The defense energized the home team, which jumped to a 13 point half time lead. In the second half, the Hawks played big time Robo-ball, controlling the pace and limiting the Bears' shot opportunities. MV made their free throws down the stretch and iced the game in the last quarter.
Dave Brown was the unsung hero of the second half, controlling the ball for a series of long stretches for which OH had no answer. Opponents simply don't apply more than token pressure against MV this season because of Dave's ball-handling presence.
First Quarter MV 24 – OH 15
Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Jonathan Krueger (’12) and Julius Turner (’12)
OH starting five – Ian Trickey, AJ King, RJ Coil, Lucas Janowicz, Geoffrey Beans
Of note, this was not the visitors’ regular starting five. Coach Dave Lindsay went with a Big-guy lineup, hoping that the Coil-Janowicz-King-Beans front would cause problems.
There would indeed be problems caused by this lineup, but they were mostly self-inflicted, relating to OH ball handling.
Jared won the tip and OH fell back into a 2-3 zone, where they stayed for the greatest percentage of the evening. Julius got the ball rolling for the Hawks with a three pointer from the left wing. The Bears were also successful their first time down the court with a Lucas Janowicz cleanup basket. A Hawk miss led to an OH double low post set, and Janowicz scored again to make it 4-3 Bears.
Rick missed a three pointer, but OH was called for a travel. Maumee Valley worked the ball in to Jared Sturt for a layup. MV had problems grabbing a rebound on the next possession and Janowicz scored on an inbounds play for an 8-5 OH lead. Jon Krueger was fouled shooting and made both.
MV put their press on at the 4:41 mark, but Rick fouled AJ King on a two point try which resulted in three free throws-don’t ask. AJ made all three for the 10-7 Green Bear lead, their biggest of the evening. Julius Turner then drove through the middle of the zone and drew a shooting foul; he split the pair.
Into the game came Ben Silverman for OH, leading to a matchup of First Team All-Ohio Golfers, Ben vs. Rick.
The press continued and succeeded – Julius picked off a pass at the OH foul line and drove back in for a floor foul – which they did not convert. More pressing led to another floor foul, but Julius intercepted the pass and scored a pair.
The press started to wear on the Bears. MV trapped AJ in the offensive end, and Julius ripped the ball away – a pass to Jared gave the Hawks their first lead at 12-11. OH was at risk of a 10 second call but was rescued by Coach Lindsay, who called a time out at the 3:13 mark.
Another OH miss led to a Jared Sturt cleanup basket, and OH turned the ball over again on the press. Jared cleaned this up as well.
The 8-0 Hawk run was enough and Coach Lindsay called his second time out to draw up an answer. But the pressure got to the Bears again. Julius swiped the ball away from AJ for another break/layup.
King finally broke the drought for OH with a two pointer, but Julius swished a three ball from his familiar perch on the left wing. AJ created some space for himself and scored, and MV had the ball with 45 seconds left. With the OH student section screaming at the Hawks, they worked it around to Rick at the buzzer which ‘quieted’ the crowd.

Second Quarter MV 11 – OH 8
Starting the quarter – Jared, Dixon Stoddard, Julius, Rick, Dave
OH had the ball in bounds to start the quarter; a flurry of turnovers ensued capped by AJ’s finest moment of the game, as he blocked a streaking Rick on a layup attempt. The Green end of the crowd went wild, but it didn’t faze the home team. Jared drew a shooting foul and made 1. Lucas Janowicz scored two for OH on a fade away.
The BCSN microphone then proceeded to fall down from the OH basket and a five minute timeout ensued. That’s life in the big leagues.
Geoffrey Beans gained a rare OH press break with a layup, but Rick was left wide open on the right wing and downed a three. Ottawa Hills’ 6’7” sophomore RJ Coil hit long-range two pointer to close it to 28-21. Then after a long but unfruitful MV possession, Rick picked AJ’s pocket at the Bears’ three point arc and went the distance for two.
MV went back to the press, forcing OH into their third time out of the half. Their plans during the break were successful, as Ian Trickey scored for the visitors, cutting it to 30-23. Following unsuccessful offensive sets for both teams, Rick fed off the visiting crowd again and downed a trey from the left side.
Jared then excited the when he blocked Coil at close range. Jon Krueger cashed in with a two pointer from the right hand elbow. That would be it for the half and the Hawks went to the locker room with a 35-23 lead.
Third Quarter OH 12 – MV 7
Starting the quarter – Original starting five
Jon Krueger drew a shooting foul to open the period and made one. Ottawa Hills threw the ball away, but MV did not capitalize. Lucas Janowicz scored first for the Bears with a field goal from the left hand baseline. The Hawks lost the ball and AJ King made it two in a row for the visitors, who had cut the lead to 36-27.
Jared worked hard at the other end, drawing a shooting foul and making both shots. After a series of goose eggs for each team (during which Julius drew his third foul), Rick got out on the break and scored for MV.
The Bears made their best run at the Hawks over the next two minutes, scoring 8 straight points and cutting the lead to 40-35, but Jared steadied the Hawk ship with this two pointer:
OH could not convert at quarter’s end, and it was 42-35 at the end of three. The visitors did not quit, and had closed the gap to seven points with one quarter to play.
Fourth Quarter MV 9 – OH 4
Starting the quarter – Original starting five
MV had the ball in, and Julius got a great look for a three pointer, but didn’t convert.
MV got the ball back and as Rick passed by the bench, the fourth quarter close shave with TC was still fresh in his mind. In battle-cry mode, he yelled out to the coaches ‘We need to attack!’
Julius must have overheard him and drove strong to the hoop, drawing the foul and making the pair. MV aggressively defended with the press, but Jon committed his third foul going for a steal at half court. OH missed the front end of a 1-and-1, letting a chance slip away.
Jon missed for MV, but again OH couldn’t make the Hawks pay. The Bears called a time out at the 6:00 mark and tried their first press on the evening. It got them nowhere and MV ran some weave offense, keeping their distance from the packed 2-3 zone. OH finally tried to match up at the top, and Dave Brown immediately knifed to the basket, drawing the shooting foul and converting after a one minute possession.
Julius committed his fourth foul on the press, and Ian Trickey split the pair. It was MV 46 - OH 36.
Rick Deichert missed a try, but once more OH could not cut into the lead. Another MV miss and Coach Lindsay called time out to prep for the stretch run. Janowicz missed a tough turn-around jumper from the left baseline, and then Ian Trickey fouled Rick – who missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Jon Krueger fouled Trickey and the Bears were in the double bonus. Trickey went 1 for 2.
MV slowed things down considerably. Ottawa Hills tried their best to harass Dave, but this proved to be a frustrating affair for the Bears. After running 40 seconds off the clock, it was Coach Robinson’s turn to call time out at the 2:08 mark.
MV threw the ball away trying to run the clock down, but Jared Sturt redeemed his teammates with a big steal. Another MV turnover, but now at 1:38 the Bears were battling two foes – the Hawks and the rapidly advancing clock.
Geoffrey Beans scored a two pointer, but it took a full 35 seconds in an offensive set. With under a minute to go, the visitors were now forced to foul – first Dave Brown made two, then after another long, unfruitful OH offensive possession Rick split another pair. Another forced Green Bear foul Rick made two more to finish it off.
The Hawks had learned their lesson at Toledo Christian, this time convincingly closing out a victory against a big rival, 50-39.
Final Game Thoughts
You definitely got the feeling in this game that OH considered themselves to be the underdog this year – and they played like a talented, but very young team. OH has only one Senior in their primary rotation. They will get better as the season goes on and should be one of the favorites in the pre-season 2012-13 TAAC coaches’ poll.
But for this season at least, when one things about the TAAC, it’s the Hawks on top and the Bears needing to work things out.

The Game was broadcast on BCSN (not in HD)…The win was the Hawks' first over their TAAC rivals at the Varsity Gym in at least five years…another sellout for the Hawks…it was AJ mania on both sides, as the Hawk cheering section donned ‘AJ masks” for the intro…

And now for the happy totals. MV's trio of Rick Deichert, Julius Turner and Jared Sturt combined for 42 points on the evening. Each had their hot streaks, especially Julius in the first quarter, then Rick in the second. Rick led the way with 16; Julius and Jared each had 13 on the night.
Also scoring for the Hawks were Jon Krueger with 5 and Dave Brown with four, all big free throws in the fourth quarter.

AJ created some space for himself and scored, and MV had the ball with 45 seconds left. With the OH student section screaming at the Hawks, they worked it around to Rick at the buzzer which ‘quieted’ the crowd.

Second Quarter MV 11 – OH 8
Starting the quarter – Jared, Dixon Stoddard, Julius, Rick, Dave
OH had the ball in bounds to start the quarter; a flurry of turnovers ensued capped by AJ’s finest moment of the game, as he blocked a streaking Rick on a layup attempt. The Green end of the crowd went wild, but it didn’t faze the home team. Jared drew a shooting foul and made 1. Lucas Janowicz scored two for OH on a fade away.
The BCSN microphone then proceeded to fall down from the OH basket and a five minute timeout ensued. That’s life in the big leagues.
Geoffrey Beans gained a rare OH press break with a layup, but Rick was left wide open on the right wing and downed a three. Ottawa Hills’ 6’7” sophomore RJ Coil hit long-range two pointer to close it to 28-21. Then after a long but unfruitful MV possession, Rick picked AJ’s pocket at the Bears’ three point arc and went the distance for two.
MV went back to the press, forcing OH into their third time out of the half. Their plans during the break were successful, as Ian Trickey scored for the visitors, cutting it to 30-23. Following unsuccessful offensive sets for both teams, Rick fed off the visiting crowd again and downed a trey from the left side.
Jared then excited the when he blocked Coil at close range. Jon Krueger cashed in with a two pointer from the right hand elbow. That would be it for the half and the Hawks went to the locker room with a 35-23 lead.
Third Quarter OH 12 – MV 7
Starting the quarter – Original starting five
Jon Krueger drew a shooting foul to open the period and made one. Ottawa Hills threw the ball away, but MV did not capitalize. Lucas Janowicz scored first for the Bears with a field goal from the left hand baseline. The Hawks lost the ball and AJ King made it two in a row for the visitors, who had cut the lead to 36-27.
Jared worked hard at the other end, drawing a shooting foul and making both shots. After a series of goose eggs for each team (during which Julius drew his third foul), Rick got out on the break and scored for MV.
The Bears made their best run at the Hawks over the next two minutes, scoring 8 straight points and cutting the lead to 40-35, but Jared steadied the Hawk ship with this two pointer:
OH could not convert at quarter’s end, and it was 42-35 at the end of three. The visitors did not quit, and had closed the gap to seven points with one quarter to play.
Fourth Quarter MV 9 – OH 4
Starting the quarter – Original starting five
MV had the ball in, and Julius got a great look for a three pointer, but didn’t convert.
MV got the ball back and as Rick passed by the bench, the fourth quarter close shave with TC was still fresh in his mind. In battle-cry mode, he yelled out to the coaches ‘We need to attack!’
Julius must have overheard him and drove strong to the hoop, drawing the foul and making the pair. MV aggressively defended with the press, but Jon committed his third foul going for a steal at half court. OH missed the front end of a 1-and-1, letting a chance slip away.
Jon missed for MV, but again OH couldn’t make the Hawks pay. The Bears called a time out at the 6:00 mark and tried their first press on the evening. It got them nowhere and MV ran some weave offense, keeping their distance from the packed 2-3 zone. OH finally tried to match up at the top, and Dave Brown immediately knifed to the basket, drawing the shooting foul and converting after a one minute possession.
Julius committed his fourth foul on the press, and Ian Trickey split the pair. It was MV 46 - OH 36.
Rick Deichert missed a try, but once more OH could not cut into the lead. Another MV miss and Coach Lindsay called time out to prep for the stretch run. Janowicz missed a tough turn-around jumper from the left baseline, and then Ian Trickey fouled Rick – who missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Jon Krueger fouled Trickey and the Bears were in the double bonus. Trickey went 1 for 2.
MV slowed things down considerably. Ottawa Hills tried their best to harass Dave, but this proved to be a frustrating affair for the Bears. After running 40 seconds off the clock, it was Coach Robinson’s turn to call time out at the 2:08 mark.
MV threw the ball away trying to run the clock down, but Jared Sturt redeemed his teammates with a big steal. Another MV turnover, but now at 1:38 the Bears were battling two foes – the Hawks and the rapidly advancing clock.
Geoffrey Beans scored a two pointer, but it took a full 35 seconds in an offensive set. With under a minute to go, the visitors were now forced to foul – first Dave Brown made two, then after another long, unfruitful OH offensive possession Rick split another pair. Another forced Green Bear foul Rick made two more to finish it off.
The Hawks had learned their lesson at Toledo Christian, this time convincingly closing out a victory against a big rival, 50-39.
Final Game Thoughts
You definitely got the feeling in this game that OH considered themselves to be the underdog this year – and they played like a talented, but very young team. OH has only one Senior in their primary rotation. They will get better as the season goes on and should be one of the favorites in the pre-season 2012-13 TAAC coaches’ poll.

But for this season at least, when one things about the TAAC, it’s the Hawks on top and the Bears needing to work things out.

Maumee Valley 51 - Ottawa Hills 39 - quick summary
HawkNation was out in full force last night to watch their team defeat the Green Bears 51-39 at the Valley. With the win, Maumee Valley righted their ship in TAAC play. They earned a 2-1 record playing the three-games-in-seven-nights gauntlet of Gibsonburg, TC and OH. The back to back wins against TC and OH are another milestone for MV.
Ottawa Hills has a big front line, but if you can't get the ball into that group, they can't do much damage. MV used full court pressure defense and forced 22 OH turnovers during the contest. The defense energized the home team, which jumped to a 13 point half time lead. In the second half, the Hawks played a lot of Robo-ball, controlling the pace and reducing the Bears' shot opportunities. MV made their free throws down the stretch and iced the game in the last quarter.
Dave Brown was the unsung hero of the second half, controlling the ball for a series of long stretches for which OH had no answer. Opponents simply don't apply more than token pressure against MV this season because of Dave's ball-handling presence.

Hawks one of eleven teams detailed in Ohio D-IV pre-season preview

• Toledo MVCD returns all but two points per game from last year’s (16-4) squad. The Hawks lost a heartbreaking 54-51 overtime contest to rival Toledo Christian in sectional play. MVCD and Toledo Christian decided its three games by just seven points. Leading the group of returnees is 6’6 senior Jared Sturt (12.6 ppg.), 6’0 senior Rick Deichert (12.5 ppg.), 6’1 senior Julius Turner (9.9 ppg.), and 5’6 junior Dave Brown (5.4 ppg.). 6’2 senior Dixon Stoddard and 5’10 senior Jonathan Krueger also return. MVCD will be involved in a tough sectional with the likes of Toledo Christian, Ottawa Hills, and Gibsonburg who has dropped down from DIII. Chapter 16 – Ultionem Viridis Ursus – Ottawa Hills 45 – Maumee Valley 38 – 2.15.11 at the Varsity Gym– Game Story
Setting the Table
On August 2, 216 BC, an overconfident and numerically superior army of the Roman Republic met the army of Carthage under the command of Carthaginian general Hannibal in the town of Cannae on the plains of southeast Italy.
The Romans, who had won a long series of battles using heavy armor and tactics adopted from the Ancient Greek armies, hunkered down in their phalanxes and looked to plow through their foe on that day. However Hannibal had other ideas and for the first time in the history of warfare unleashed his famous double envelopment strategy on the Romans, recording a smashing victory.
According to the Roman historian Livy "it is said that 45,500 foot soldiers and 2,700 horsemen were slain in almost equal proportion of citizens and allies". He also reported that 3,000 Roman and allied infantry and 1,500 Roman and allied cavalry were taken prisoner by the Carthaginians.
It was a devastating rout of the most powerful army in its time.

Thus it came to pass that the Romans were upset on their own home court, so to speak.
While Maumee Valley Country Day School is probably not the first place that comes to mind when making a list of Barbarians at the Gate (although it would be cool to have an elephant as a mascot)…
… a sense of unease permeated the air Tuesday February 15, 2010 at the Varsity Gym. After all, the upstart Hawks had gone to the Village of Ottawa Hills in January and stunned the State Number 7 Green Bears 45-42. That game was sparsely attended by the OH home faithful, used to MV games being just one more victory in a long series of walkovers (and who could blame them?).
They would not take the second game so lightly. The Varsity Gym began to fill up at 5pm, a full hour before the JV game started. The Green Bear faithful took their full share of the 400+ seat varsity Gym, black-clad students on one side and parents (who seemed a little less relaxed than usual) on the other.
The Hawk fans were there as well and the result was a gym packed to the rafters, Police officers counting and recounting so the latecomers could hope to get a seat for the game.
Those who did make it in were treated to a classic big-stakes game…
Game Summary
Ottawa Hills evened the score against the Hawks tonight winning at the Varsity Gym 45-38. It was a game of streaks, with the Green Bears jumping out to a 13-4 lead at the end of the first. The Hawks roared back in the second quarter to lead 24-21 at the break.
OH's key stretch came in the third when they were able to find an opening in the Hawks zone at the right wing during the last 3:38 of the third quarter and converted several key shots to go up by five at the end of three, 32-27.
MV cut the lead to one during the fourth, then to two as late as the 2:45 mark, but could not convert down the stretch. Between the free throw line and the melee of pressing while behind, the Bears got it back up to seven by game's end.
The Hawks had their chances - taking the number of total shot attempts as OH (38). However cold shooting from the outside did the home team in. Both teams made four three-point shots, but MV attempted 18 compared with 10 for the Bears.
For the Hawks, Rick Deichert led the way with 11, followed by Julius Turner with 9 and Jared Sturt with 8. Dave Brown had 6 for MV, Jon Krueger scored 3 and Dixon Stoddard added 1.
Ottawa Hills’ top three scorers accounted for 40 of the team’s 45 points. Lucas Janowicz led the field with 17 points, JJ Buckey had 12 and Andrew Jamieson added 11 .
First Quarter OH 13 - MV 4

Ottawa Hills started out in a 2-3 zone. Throughout the course of the evening, they would frequently employ a 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man. They did not offer more than a token press.
MV started in man and switched to the hybrid 2-3 zone on and off. MV pressed more, but not all-out until game’s end.
OH got the tap and Andrew Jamieson missed his first attempt. The Hawks opened the scoring on a Jared putback of a Rick Deichert miss. The Bears came right back with a Lucas Janowicz basket to tie it up.
MV misfired again on a three point shot, and Andrew Jamieson cashed in on a fast break basket. Lucas Janowicz scored a turnaround jumper to give the visitors a 6-2 lead and force an early time out by the Hawks with 4:12 left in the quarter. The home team was ice cold in its home gym; missing three straight shots by wide margins before Dave Brown scored off a Rick Deichert save of a ball going out of bounds, cutting the lead to 8-4.
But OH’s senior forward Andrew Jamieson came back on the next possession firing a three ball in with Rick right in his face, then one more two pointer by Janowicz finished things off in the quarter.
The Green Bears got the fast start they were hoping for, and let 13-4 at the end of the first. Conversely, the Hawks began the night 0-6 from behind the three point line and shot a paltry 22% overall.
Second Quarter – MV 20 – OH 8
Starting the Quarter – Dave, Rick, Jared, Dixon and Jonathan Krueger
MV began the quarter in its hybrid 2-3 zone, hoping to slow down the productive OH front line. Jared again opened up the scoring with a layup, but Janowicz floated to an open hole in the zone for an easy counter.
The Hawks came out in their spread offense, and Rick started the Hawk comeback with a three from the left wing. Ottawa Hills came back for two points on a putback by Geoffrey Beans.
After a few misses on both ends, Dave Brown scored two down the middle for MV, and after a floor foul by Jamieson, Julius took the ball down main street for another two pointer. The Hawis had pulled to within four, 17-13 and Coach Dave Lindsey called the Bears first time out of the gaje at the 4:14 mark.
MV’s zone continued to be effective and after another stop, Jared Sturt scored a basket and drew the foul, but missed the extra. Jamieson stopped the Green bleeding with a floater for two, but Julius came back strong to the hoop, cutting it to 19-17 Ottawa Hills.
OH threw the ball away on its next possession, then Jared found the rim for the tie. Lucas Janowicz scored next for the visitors to go back up two.
Julius Turner finally found his three point range with 53 seconds left, then after a double dribble call on JJ Buckey, Maumee Valley had the ball and a one point lead with 47.3 seconds remaining.
True to form, the Hawks played for the last shot. As seen here on video, the final play was intended to give Rick a three point try from the left hand corner. OH got to the spot in time, so Rick pounded in toward the middle for…
…this counterclockwise twisting runner which dropped in at the buzzer. Rick was fired up, and the Hawks completed the comeback, heading to the locker room up by three, 24-21.
Third Quarter – OH 11 – MV 3
Starting the Quarter – Initial game starters
After a rough stretch of man defense in the second quarter, the Green Bears switched up to a 1-3-1 zone. OH started the quarter with the ball, but missed their first chance.
Maumee Valley began the quarter very deliberately with a 1:02-long possession ending with a Julius Turner finger roll basket and the Hawks were up by five. Dixon Stoddard rebounded a missed shot, but MV was unable to convert on the possession.
At the 5:08 mark, JJ Buckey was left alone for a three pointer and nailed it to cut the hosts lead to two points. The Green Bears had found a hole in the Hawks’ zone on the right wing and began to take advantage.
Rick Deichert’s three point try bounced high off the rim and hit the apparatus and OH was back in business. Lucas Janowicz converted at the other end to tie the game back up at 26-all.
The Hawks shooting went cold again as Julius missed a three point try, and the Green Bears went back to the hole in the zone. This time Ian Trickey, with enough time to sing the first three bars of the OH fight song, knocked down a three pointer. Coach Robinson needed to patch the hole and called time with 3:13 left.
MV had the ball and at 2:35 Dixon Stoddard was fouled shooting.
He made one to bring the Hawks back to within 2, 29-27. But OH would find the same gap one more time and Buckey ripped the cords for a final three pointer. The quarter ended with the Bears ahead 5, 32-27.
Fourth Quarter OH 13 – MV 11
Starting the Quarter – Rick, Dave, Jonathan, Jared, Julius
MV gave the visitors a bad memory to start the third when Jon Krueger hit a three on a pass out from Jared on the block, immediately closing the gap to two points. Jon fouled Lucas Janowicz at the other end and the Bears’ center made one of two.
The Hawks came up empty at the other end after two tries, but OH couldn’t convert either. MV again came up short, but Dave Brown stole the ball off the defensive rebound and put a pretty loop de looping layup and it was back down to one 33-32.
Ottawa Hills called time to draw up a play and JJ Buckey hit a pull-up jumper for two. Janowicz committed a foul just after the play, so the basket counted.
Rick Deichert missed a three point attempt on the next possession and fell hard chasing the play coming the other way. The Bears could not convert despite three cracks at the basket and Jared pulled down the rebound. MVs outside shooting woes continued however as Julius missed a three point try. This time Andrew Jamieson made a two point shot and it was 37-32 OH.
The teams traded empty possessions, and then Rick Deichert singed the cords on a three point shot at 2:45 remaining to close it to 37-35.
Jared blocked an OH shot to give the Hawks the ball back
...but that would prove to be the Hawks last chance. A turnover by Julius and the Bears got the ball back to JJ Buckey for a two pointer and a four point lead.
Jared turned the ball over and now with under 1:30 remaining, MV needed to commit a series of fouls to get the visitors on the line. During this melee, the Bears managed to free Buckey on an inbounds play for an easy layup. It was 41-35 OH.
With 48 seconds left, Ian Trickey got too aggressive on defense and fouled Rick Deichert on a three point attempt.

...cutting the lead to 41-38.
Jared fouled Jamieson to stop the clock and the Senior made both ends with under 30 to play. After a last MV miss and a cleanup hoop by Lucas Janowicz, the final buzzer sounded and Ottawa Hills was victorious in the rematch, final score 45-38.
Final Game Thoughts
Most high school students can recall the battle of Cannae and how Hannibal defeated the Romans. But not so many can tell you that in the aftermath, the Romans redoubled their efforts, retrained their armies, changed their tactics and went on to crush the entire civilization of Carthage en route to Rome’s greatest glories. So like the Romans after the disastrous Battle of Cannae, the established power in the TAAC did not turn and run, but redoubled its efforts in light of a new challenge. The Hawks are not looking for the rest of this historical parallel to manifest itself.
One game does not a season make. Conversely, no obstacle is insurmountable and as one side recovers from defeat and learns, so can the other.
And so the first two rounds are over and each team has shown strengths and weaknesses. Both teams can take comfort, and simultaneously be quite concerned with stretches of strong play on both sides.
With the win, the Bears effectively fulfilled the pre-season predictions and took the TAAC lead with just a few Conference games left for both teams. It being unlikely OH will lose those games it looks like a second place finish for the Hawks provided they took care of business at Cardinal Stritch later in the week.
Lots of basketball remains, but getting to a Round 3 game vs. the Bears is a paramount goal for Maumee Valley. Practice hard and play well Hawks - parvis imbutus tentabis grandia tutus.

Lucas Janowicz led all scorers with 17 points for Ottawa Hills, including 12 in the first half. JJ Buckey had 12, Andrew Jamieson 11, Ian Trickey 3 and Geoffrey Beans 2.

According to the Roman historian Livy "it is said that 45,500 foot soldiers and 2,700 horsemen were slain in almost equal proportion of citizens and allies". He also reported that 3,000 Roman and allied infantry and 1,500 Roman and allied cavalry were taken prisoner by the Carthaginians.
It was a devastating rout of the most powerful army in its time.

… a sense of unease permeated the air Tuesday February 15, 2010 at the Varsity Gym. After all, the upstart Hawks had gone to the Village of Ottawa Hills in January and stunned the State Number 7 Green Bears 45-42. That game was sparsely attended by the OH home faithful, used to MV games being just one more victory in a long series of walkovers (and who could blame them?).
They would not take the second game so lightly. The Varsity Gym began to fill up at 5pm, a full hour before the JV game started. The Green Bear faithful took their full share of the 400+ seat varsity Gym, black-clad students on one side and parents (who seemed a little less relaxed than usual) on the other.
The Hawk fans were there as well and the result was a gym packed to the rafters, Police officers counting and recounting so the latecomers could hope to get a seat for the game.
Those who did make it in were treated to a classic big-stakes game…
Game Summary
Ottawa Hills evened the score against the Hawks tonight winning at the Varsity Gym 45-38. It was a game of streaks, with the Green Bears jumping out to a 13-4 lead at the end of the first. The Hawks roared back in the second quarter to lead 24-21 at the break.
OH's key stretch came in the third when they were able to find an opening in the Hawks zone at the right wing during the last 3:38 of the third quarter and converted several key shots to go up by five at the end of three, 32-27.
MV cut the lead to one during the fourth, then to two as late as the 2:45 mark, but could not convert down the stretch. Between the free throw line and the melee of pressing while behind, the Bears got it back up to seven by game's end.
The Hawks had their chances - taking the number of total shot attempts as OH (38). However cold shooting from the outside did the home team in. Both teams made four three-point shots, but MV attempted 18 compared with 10 for the Bears.
For the Hawks, Rick Deichert led the way with 11, followed by Julius Turner with 9 and Jared Sturt with 8. Dave Brown had 6 for MV, Jon Krueger scored 3 and Dixon Stoddard added 1.
Ottawa Hills’ top three scorers accounted for 40 of the team’s 45 points. Lucas Janowicz led the field with 17 points, JJ Buckey had 12 and Andrew Jamieson added 11 .

Ottawa Hills started out in a 2-3 zone. Throughout the course of the evening, they would frequently employ a 1-3-1 zone and man-to-man. They did not offer more than a token press.
MV started in man and switched to the hybrid 2-3 zone on and off. MV pressed more, but not all-out until game’s end.
OH got the tap and Andrew Jamieson missed his first attempt. The Hawks opened the scoring on a Jared putback of a Rick Deichert miss. The Bears came right back with a Lucas Janowicz basket to tie it up.
MV misfired again on a three point shot, and Andrew Jamieson cashed in on a fast break basket. Lucas Janowicz scored a turnaround jumper to give the visitors a 6-2 lead and force an early time out by the Hawks with 4:12 left in the quarter. The home team was ice cold in its home gym; missing three straight shots by wide margins before Dave Brown scored off a Rick Deichert save of a ball going out of bounds, cutting the lead to 8-4.
But OH’s senior forward Andrew Jamieson came back on the next possession firing a three ball in with Rick right in his face, then one more two pointer by Janowicz finished things off in the quarter.
The Green Bears got the fast start they were hoping for, and let 13-4 at the end of the first. Conversely, the Hawks began the night 0-6 from behind the three point line and shot a paltry 22% overall.
Second Quarter – MV 20 – OH 8
Starting the Quarter – Dave, Rick, Jared, Dixon and Jonathan Krueger
MV began the quarter in its hybrid 2-3 zone, hoping to slow down the productive OH front line. Jared again opened up the scoring with a layup, but Janowicz floated to an open hole in the zone for an easy counter.
The Hawks came out in their spread offense, and Rick started the Hawk comeback with a three from the left wing. Ottawa Hills came back for two points on a putback by Geoffrey Beans.
After a few misses on both ends, Dave Brown scored two down the middle for MV, and after a floor foul by Jamieson, Julius took the ball down main street for another two pointer. The Hawis had pulled to within four, 17-13 and Coach Dave Lindsey called the Bears first time out of the gaje at the 4:14 mark.
MV’s zone continued to be effective and after another stop, Jared Sturt scored a basket and drew the foul, but missed the extra. Jamieson stopped the Green bleeding with a floater for two, but Julius came back strong to the hoop, cutting it to 19-17 Ottawa Hills.
OH threw the ball away on its next possession, then Jared found the rim for the tie. Lucas Janowicz scored next for the visitors to go back up two.
Julius Turner finally found his three point range with 53 seconds left, then after a double dribble call on JJ Buckey, Maumee Valley had the ball and a one point lead with 47.3 seconds remaining.
True to form, the Hawks played for the last shot. As seen here on video, the final play was intended to give Rick a three point try from the left hand corner. OH got to the spot in time, so Rick pounded in toward the middle for…
…this counterclockwise twisting runner which dropped in at the buzzer. Rick was fired up, and the Hawks completed the comeback, heading to the locker room up by three, 24-21.
Third Quarter – OH 11 – MV 3
Starting the Quarter – Initial game starters
After a rough stretch of man defense in the second quarter, the Green Bears switched up to a 1-3-1 zone. OH started the quarter with the ball, but missed their first chance.
Maumee Valley began the quarter very deliberately with a 1:02-long possession ending with a Julius Turner finger roll basket and the Hawks were up by five. Dixon Stoddard rebounded a missed shot, but MV was unable to convert on the possession.
At the 5:08 mark, JJ Buckey was left alone for a three pointer and nailed it to cut the hosts lead to two points. The Green Bears had found a hole in the Hawks’ zone on the right wing and began to take advantage.
Rick Deichert’s three point try bounced high off the rim and hit the apparatus and OH was back in business. Lucas Janowicz converted at the other end to tie the game back up at 26-all.
The Hawks shooting went cold again as Julius missed a three point try, and the Green Bears went back to the hole in the zone. This time Ian Trickey, with enough time to sing the first three bars of the OH fight song, knocked down a three pointer. Coach Robinson needed to patch the hole and called time with 3:13 left.
MV had the ball and at 2:35 Dixon Stoddard was fouled shooting.
He made one to bring the Hawks back to within 2, 29-27. But OH would find the same gap one more time and Buckey ripped the cords for a final three pointer. The quarter ended with the Bears ahead 5, 32-27.
Fourth Quarter OH 13 – MV 11
Starting the Quarter – Rick, Dave, Jonathan, Jared, Julius
MV gave the visitors a bad memory to start the third when Jon Krueger hit a three on a pass out from Jared on the block, immediately closing the gap to two points. Jon fouled Lucas Janowicz at the other end and the Bears’ center made one of two.
The Hawks came up empty at the other end after two tries, but OH couldn’t convert either. MV again came up short, but Dave Brown stole the ball off the defensive rebound and put a pretty loop de looping layup and it was back down to one 33-32.
Ottawa Hills called time to draw up a play and JJ Buckey hit a pull-up jumper for two. Janowicz committed a foul just after the play, so the basket counted.
Rick Deichert missed a three point attempt on the next possession and fell hard chasing the play coming the other way. The Bears could not convert despite three cracks at the basket and Jared pulled down the rebound. MVs outside shooting woes continued however as Julius missed a three point try. This time Andrew Jamieson made a two point shot and it was 37-32 OH.
The teams traded empty possessions, and then Rick Deichert singed the cords on a three point shot at 2:45 remaining to close it to 37-35.
Jared blocked an OH shot to give the Hawks the ball back
...but that would prove to be the Hawks last chance. A turnover by Julius and the Bears got the ball back to JJ Buckey for a two pointer and a four point lead.
Jared turned the ball over and now with under 1:30 remaining, MV needed to commit a series of fouls to get the visitors on the line. During this melee, the Bears managed to free Buckey on an inbounds play for an easy layup. It was 41-35 OH.
With 48 seconds left, Ian Trickey got too aggressive on defense and fouled Rick Deichert on a three point attempt.

...cutting the lead to 41-38.
Jared fouled Jamieson to stop the clock and the Senior made both ends with under 30 to play. After a last MV miss and a cleanup hoop by Lucas Janowicz, the final buzzer sounded and Ottawa Hills was victorious in the rematch, final score 45-38.
Final Game Thoughts

Boys’ JV Loses to Ottawa Hills, 29-36, Moves to 10-1 in TAAC on the Season

In a tough match up on Tuesday night, the Boys’ JV suffered their first TAAC loss on the season. The Ottawa Hills Green Bears defeated the Hawks 36-29 in four quarters of good all around play. The Hawks got off to a rough start against the Green Bears. Tenacious defense by Ottawa Hills against our guards and an offensive strategy to pass the ball to the 6’ 3” freshman in the middle and let him shoot, moved Ottawa Hills to an early lead over the Hawks. The Hawks finished the first quarter trailing the Green Bears 6-12.
In the second quarter, the Hawks used a different strategy against the inside play of the Green Bears and experienced a lot of success. They actively defended against the inside pass with two or three people trying to deny the ball and they were able to get their offense going with better management of the ball. This combination, a solid defensive effort that denied the inside pass and when it was made, stole it, and better running of the offense, propelled the Hawks to a 27-21 lead over the Green Bears at the half.
In the third and fourth quarters, the Hawks would only score two points offensively and experienced a lot of turnovers that created offensive opportunities for the Green Bears. In the end the Green Bears prevailed, beating the Hawks 36-29 to end the game.
Overall a tough loss for Hawks’ fans, but a darn good TAAC season for the Boys’ JV.
Up next, one final TAAC game against the Cardinal Stretch Cardinals on Friday. And then a nonconference game on Saturday against North Baltimore will wrap up a busy week for the Hawks.

OH girls 68 – MV 18 – 1.28.11 – At OH
Short report this evening. That was the best team the girls will play this year and probably next.
Starting the game - Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Cammie Lonsway (‘14), Genna Danes (‘12), Karla Luketic (‘11) and Kristin Bigelow (’12) – also playing for MV – Jordan Baker (’14), Yazmin AbdelKarim (’12), and Cammie Lonsway (’14)
Lauren Abendroth for OH made about eight of nine three pointers this evening. MV struggled much of the night against an athletic man-to-man defense by the Green Bears. Things got away from the Hawks early.
But I did get this highlight of Delaney stealing the ball on the press and dishing it off to Kristin for two.

Watched Ottawa Hills vs. Toledo Christian on TV - comments
Nothing too insightful here, just some impressions.
1. I didn't realize how small the TC gym was. Their press to a great extent is build around that floor. There's less space to cover. It will be interesting to see how they adjust in their new building.
2. Ottawa Hills won that game down the stretch at the line. Impressive free throw shooting by the Bears. Conversely, they almost gave the game away in the fourth quarter with a lot of quick posessions. Coach Lindsay must have been pulling his hair out.
3. David Westmeyer and Andrew Jamieson were the best players on the court that evening. Although Josh Whitlow played a big part in the Eagles' comeback with three 3-pointers in the second half. He was money from the left hand corner.
4. OH played much of the game without Lucas Janowicz - first due to foul trouble, then because OH wanted ball handlers in the game.
5. This year anyway, OH lives by the fade away jumper. TC lives by the three.
6. TC thrives on a fast paced game. They are vulnerable to a good inside game.
7. Note for next year - TC currently starts five seniors, OH starts three.
8. Coach Stan Joplin is a good analyst.
