Maumee Valley overcame an 11 point deficit with 7:15 remaining in the fourth quarter to defeat Ottawa Hills 56-53 at the Green Bears' fieldhouse. With 10.8 seconds to play, Dave Brown jumped in front of an OH inbounds pass and scored with an 'and 1' layup giving the visitors their first lead since the second quarter.
The Hawks maintained their composure as time ran down in the fourth, making their free throws (16/21) and creating turnovers down the stretch.
The thrilling win and became even more meaningful with the news that Toledo Christian defeated Gibsonburg in overtime 45-44 in the first game in the new TC gym. With that win and the MV victory, the Hawks now sit alone in sole posession of first place in the TAAC. The win and Golden Bear loss (banning a total collapse against Emmanuel on Friday or Bettsville Saturday) also clinches the first seed for MV in the Sectional tournament.
Also, the win completes a 3-0 Trifecta against Gibsonburg, Toledo Christian and Ottawa Hills in a crucial second half stretch for TAAC supremacy.
Rick Deichert led the way for MV with 16 points and a big save of a ball near the end of the game. Jared Sturt had 12, Julius Turner and Dave Brown (with his season high) had 11. Jon Krueger and Dixon Stoddard each scored 3.
