2013-4 Season Chapter Two - MV 67 - Monclova Christian 17 - Delaying a Rebuild - Game Story

December 3, 2013 - Varsity Gym

Maumee Valley routed the Monclova Christian Thunder 67-17 to even their record at 1-1.  Every MV player saw game time before the end of the first half.  The final points of the first half were scored on a Rashad Woodley three pointer from the left wing to put the Hawks up 37-8.

Eleven Hawks scored before the night was over.

Monclova Christian returned to boys basketball action after missing a full season in 2012-3.  During this period the Thunder lost a few players to transfer and are clearly in a rebuilding mode.  Their team is dominated by underclassmen who are just now receiving their introduction to varsity basketball.  There was no JV game.

The Hawks did not cooperate with the rebuild on this night.

Our fairly representative highlight for the evening was this left handed drive to the basket by Lucas Isaza.

Scoring:

Truth Foreman - 6
Danny Hazimah - 8
Marcus Knabbs - 2
Keith McClure - 4
Jack Herrmann - 6
Lucas Isaza - 7
Jeremy Anderson - 5
Nick Towns - 3
Turner Booth - 6
Thad Woodard - 2
Solomon Collins - 9
Rashad Woodley - 9

2013-4 Season Chapter One - Fayette 40 - MV 28 Opening Night - Game Story

November 30, 2013 - MV Varsity Gym

As noted previously in this space, MV's Winterim program is a highlight experience for every High Schooler.  Alumni invariably hold fond remembrances of their one month of independent or group study.  Winterim typically takes MV students from Toledo to the far corners of the earth for great experiences.

Winterim also can make for some catch-up on the basketball court, as the MV travelers normally return less than a week before the season begins.  Sometimes it takes a game or two to shake the rust off.

This seemed to be the case Saturday November 30, 2013, when the Hawks dropped their first home opener since 2009 against a tough Fayette Eagles' team 40-28 at the Varsity Gym.

Fayette jumped out to a 10-5 first quarter lead, and packed into a tight 2-3 zone for the entire game.  The Eagles extended their lead to 17-8 at half time.  Highlights were few and far between, but here is a great block by Rashad Woodley with a Marcus Knabbs drive to the basket where he was fouled.

Fayette maintained their lead in the third quarter and were up 23-13 with 1:00 left.

The Hawks came to life at that point, scoring seven points in the last sixty seconds of the frame on a Truth Foreman three ball at the 0:55 mark,

which he followed up on by stealing the ball and driving for another basket:

Danny Hazimah capped off the quarter with another steal and field goal as time expired.  The Hawks clawed back to within three points, down 23-20 by the end of the third quarter.

But that would be the high water mark for the home team on this rare Thanksgiving weekend game.  Cold shooting from beyond the arc for the Hawks and ball control offense by the Eagles served the visitors well down the stretch and Fayette came away with the win.

So not the start the home team was looking for, but flashes of good play abounded on this Saturday night.  Coach Josh Arthur got to see his entire team on the floor on this night and looks to have a deep bench through the entire season.

Scoring:
Truth Foreman - 5
Danny Hazimah - 2
Marcus Knabbs - 1
Lucas Isaza - 4
Thad Woodard - 5
Solomon Collins - 7
Rashad Woodley - 2

Roger Spurgeon officially opens the 2013-4 Season

A familiar call from the varsity gym.

Rebooting

After the first 10 days of Hawk basketball, the 2013-4 edition of MV basketball deserves some historical credit.  So your Editor will attempt to keep a record of the new season, with a more concise set of postings.

In the meantime, as time allows some historical gaps may be filled in.

Keep up with the blog, and as always, you see all the Hawk videos on YouTube, channel TheHoopsEditor.

MV 71 - Arcadia 35 Insightful Internet Commentary

Big crowd on hand after the game, as Charles Bachelot, Jeremy Anderson, Rashad Woodley, Miranda Vargas, Thaddeus Woodard and Nick Towns discuss the Hawks successful trip to Hancock County.  Make sure you all study hard down the Winter Break stretch.

Hawks defeat Arcadia 71-35

The Hawks got a much needed lift after a tough week, defeating the Arcadia Redskins 71-35.  The Hawks jumped out to an 18-6 first quarter lead and never looked back.  Dave Brown scored all 22 of his points in the first half and spent the third quarter dealing the ball to his teammates.  Twelve different Hawks scored on the evening.

In addition to Dave, Zain Bedi had 3, Marcus Knabbs 8, Danny Hazimah 4, Lucas Izasa 3, Solomon Collins 2, Nick Towns 4, Caleb Willhight 8, Rashaan Preston 2, Kadar Jones 2, Thad Woodard 6 and Rashad Woodley 5.
So a after a tough start, Maumee Valley ends the week on an up note.  This week will be devoted to projects and tests in this last week before Winter Break.  Next up is a tough trip to Old Fort to face a potential District playoff 1 or 2 seed.
More to come, as your Hawkblogger will regroup from a week of heavy for-profit work and catch up on the TC and OH losses.  Stay tuned.
