MV 67 - Monclova Christian 17 - Insightful Internet Commentary

It's MV's version of SportsCenter with primary anchors Thad Woodard and Jeremy Anderson and a special guest appearance by Cecily White.

Special kudos to tonight's sponsor...

2013-4 Season Chapter Two - MV 67 - Monclova Christian 17 - Delaying a Rebuild - Game Story

December 3, 2013 - Varsity Gym

Maumee Valley routed the Monclova Christian Thunder 67-17 to even their record at 1-1.  Every MV player saw game time before the end of the first half.  The final points of the first half were scored on a Rashad Woodley three pointer from the left wing to put the Hawks up 37-8.

Eleven Hawks scored before the night was over.

Monclova Christian returned to boys basketball action after missing a full season in 2012-3.  During this period the Thunder lost a few players to transfer and are clearly in a rebuilding mode.  Their team is dominated by underclassmen who are just now receiving their introduction to varsity basketball.  There was no JV game.

The Hawks did not cooperate with the rebuild on this night.

Our fairly representative highlight for the evening was this left handed drive to the basket by Lucas Isaza.

Scoring:

Truth Foreman - 6
Danny Hazimah - 8
Marcus Knabbs - 2
Keith McClure - 4
Jack Herrmann - 6
Lucas Isaza - 7
Jeremy Anderson - 5
Nick Towns - 3
Turner Booth - 6
Thad Woodard - 2
Solomon Collins - 9
Rashad Woodley - 9

STOP THE PRESSES - More AJ King Trade Fallout

In a blockbuster move, Jim Fish decided to go for broke, and the Toledo Blade broke the shocking news that Rick Deichert was traded to the Monclova Christian Thunder.

Deichert scored 10 points to lead the Thunder in the Tuesday evening contest (scroll about half way down).

Deichert played the game last evening in a white uniform to further confuse his ex-teammates.  Your Hawkblogger has made a call to the OHSAA for a ruling.

MV 73 - Monclova Christian 35 - Quick Summary

The Hawks defeated the Monclova Christian Thunder by 38 Tuesday at the Varsity Gym, in a near-carbon copy (has any current High School Student ever seen an actual carbon copy?) of the Hawks earlier win at MCA.  MV jumped out to a commanding 31-6 first quarter lead, then coasted to victory.

MV's main rotation played sparingly throughout the evening, but Julius Turner would make the most of his minutes tonight pouring in 21 points for the second consecutive game.  Jared Sturt and Caleb Willhight scored 11 in the win, Rick Deichert had 10, Dave Brown had 5, Jon Krueger and  Nick Frasco had 4, Dixon Stoddard, Thad Woodard and Nick Towns had 2 and Rashaan Preston had 1.  All the Hawks saw action during the evening.

The JVs topped the varsity's margin of victory earlier in the evening, topping the Thunder JVs 44-5.  Scoring for the JVs was Solomon Collins with 8, Lucas Isaza and Thad Woodard with 7, Danny Hazimah with 6, Marcus Knabbs, Rashard Woodley and Nick Towns with 3, Zain Bedi, Trueth Foreman and Rashaan Preston with 2 and Jeremy Anderson 1.

Next up for HawkNation, a Friday the 13th visit from the Danbury Lakers.

MV 73 - MCA 35 - Insightful (?) Internet Commentary

Some agent must have told the Hawks that getting on the IIC is good for their careers.  The number of commentators continues to grow each game.  Your Hawkblogger will let you judge whether greater quantity brings greater quality. Here are Marcus Knabbs, Dave Brown, Rick Deichert, Thad Woodard and Robbie Ariss with the call. Cameos by Rashaan Preston and Nicholas Anthony Frasco:

Chapter 22 – Press...Blur…and that’ll do it! – MV 74 – (at) Monclova Christian Academy 35 – 12.6.11 at the Thunderdome - Game Story

Setting the Table
It would be the second out-of conference game in a row for Maumee Valley, this time against the Monclova Christian Academy Thunder. The Thunderdome is a wonderful place to play and the home boosters are most hospitable.

The guests would not return these courtesies on the floor this night. Pressure defense early by Maumee Valley ensured that the three Gibsonburg coaches sent to scout the Hawks in advance of their big TAAC match-up would not see much of the MV offense this night.

Game Summary

It was a track meet with Maumee Valley bringing home the gold from the Monclova Christian Thunder, 74-36. MV ran an early press and was up 20 before the end of the first quarter. From that point forward, Coach Robinson stayed in the half court defense and played long stretches at a slow pace. The Hawk starters only played 1.5 quarters of the game on average. Every Hawk played at least five minutes tonight.

The JV's also rolled, beating their Thunder counterparts 55-12. Nick Towns led the JVs with 8, followed by Kedar Jones and Turner Booth with 7 each, Solomon Collins and Marcus Knabbs with 6 each, Jeremy Anderson and Osama Alkhalili with 4 each, Robbie Ariss with 3 and Lucas Isaza and Danny Hazimah with 2 apiece.

First Quarter – MV 24 – MCA 5

Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Jonathan Krueger (’12) and Julius Turner (’12)

MV played man-to-man all evening, including the press. MCA worked a 2-3 zone.

The game opened slowly, with MV running its base offense. Jared scored the first points on two free throws and Dave Brown hit a scooper. MV played tough early half court defense, forcing this turnover.

Once warmed up, the Hawks started their press. From the Thunder’s point of view, things became a blur for a while. Rick scored first with a layup and MCA's coach called a time out at the 6:27 mark to see if he could guide his team through the coming storm.

He could not.

Over the next six minutes Maumee Valley would go on a 18-5 run, with scoring from Julius, Jared (now 4/4 from the line, Dave, Julius again (twice) – here’s the first time off a Rick Deichert steal..

...Dave again, Julius again with a free throw, Caleb Willhight…and it was 21-2 MV. With the Thunder barely able to get the ball across the half court line, Coach Robinson called off the press up by 19. Caleb would put the icing on the quarter with a three pointer near quarter’s end to finish things off for the Hawks.

The game was well in hand and many Hawks would see extended action this evening.

Second Quarter MV 13 – MCA 13

On the floor for MV: Nick Frasco, Caleb Willhight, Thad Woodard, Julius Turner and Jared Sturt

Thad was fouled shooting to start the quarter and split the free throw pair. MCA’s guard Trevor Hestor would come alive during the quarter and begin to hit jump shots on the right side of the key off high post screens – the Thunder’s most effective offense of the evening. The visitors answered with a Julius drive of his own, and MCA22 scored again. Jared was up next in the scoring column – and MCA22 hit another shot.

This back and forth ended when Caleb Willhight hit his second trey of the evening, then came back down the floor and was fouled near the basket. He would make both.

Rashaan Preston now entered the game with 3:10 remaining in the half. Maumee Valley’s scoring ended with a basket by Thad. It was 38-18 at half time.

Third Quarter MV 26 – MCA 10

On the floor – original starting five

The 16 point bulge for Maumee Valley actually did not reflect play. It could have been a lot worse, as the Hawksquad did not apply any pressure during the quarter. The main starters played about 2/3 of this quarter, and here are some video highlights:

First, here’s Dave Brown driving the basket on a break

Next up, the offense works the ball into Jared who converts – note the foul not called after the shot..

Rick Deichert gets into the flow – listen for the ‘money’ call in the video:

Rick finds Jared trailing on the break for this basket

Thad Woodard would replace Julius and score on this down-low iso play.

Jared basically had his way on the boards, illustrated by this putback for two.

Rick converted on this fast break

Jared would float through the MCA zone and score on this layup

And three MV starters teamed up for this rebound (Jon) fast break (Rick) and score (Dave)

Jared finished off the scoring in the quarter off of this inbounds play

And so went. At the end of three, it was MV 64 – MCA 28

Fourth Quarter MV 10 – MCA 6

On the floor: Nick, Caleb, Thad, Jared, Rashaan

Lots of play in the fourth with lots of players, and your Hawkblogger caught some history during the period.

First up, here are Nick Towns first career points in a varsity uniform:

Some other fourth quarter plays include this Nick Frasco jumper:

More history – Rob Ariss’ first varsity points:

A nice lead pass by Thad to Nick for a layup

A basket by Thad Woodard

And finally, a scene that’s probably played out at least 100 times for Coach Robinson – his team scoring late in the game as the young players work the base offense – here it’s Thad again.

Final Game Thoughts

A big night for the Hawks and a tough night for the hosts. Lots of empathy for MCA, the Hawks have been in their position many times in the past. Things will improve for the Thunder, as they are a very young team.

Scoring

Even though the starters only played about 12 minutes each, this was enough time for Jared Sturt to lead all scorers with 22 points. Julius Turner scored his uniform number tonight (11), and Caleb Willhight went double digits for the first time in his varsity career, downing 10 points. Also scoring for the Hawks were Dave Brown and Thad Woodard with 9 each, Rick Deichert with 7, Nick Frasco with 4, and Robbie Ariss and Nick Towns with their first varsity points - each with two on the evening.

Next up

The first round of the key three game stretch of TAAC heavyweights starts next week when the Gibsonburg Golden Bears.

MV 74 - Monclova Christian 36 - Insightful Internet Commentary

We have a special treat for you tonight here at the Hawkblog, it's John, Paul, George and Ringo Thad Woodard, Robbie Ariss (proud scorer of his first varsity points tonight) Nick Frasco and India Bedi.

Just sit back and bask in the munificence of their in-depth analysis.

Maumee Valley 74 - Monclova Christian 36 - quick summary

It was a track meet early with Maumee Valley bringing home the gold from the Monclova Christian Thunder, 74-36.

Still, this was enough time for Jared Sturt to lead all scorers with 22 points.

Condolences to the Gibsonburg Golden Bear coaching staff who sent three staffers to scout the Hawks.  They did not get their $5 admission's worth this evening and left at the half.

Monclova Christian Academy - Preview - I got nuthin'

The Right Honourable Gentlemen will note that the Hawks are going for two in a row.  Here, here.
 Paraphrasing Winston Churchill

'A riddle wrapped up in an enigma'

Meaning - A puzzle - difficult to solve.

Origin - A form of Winston Churchill's quotation, made in a radio broadcast in October 1939:

"I cannot forecast to you the action of Monclova Christian Academy. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Toledo area high school basketball interest."

There are no available previews of Monclova that I'm aware of.  Here's what I know.  MCA was 14-4 last year.  One of those losses were to the Hawks, coincidentally by a score identical to Saturday's Fayette game - 50-39.  The second scheduled game was cancelled due to snow.

In the Hawks win, 26 of the Thunder's 39 points were scored by now graduated Senior Kenny N'Douba.  That's all you need to know.

Take the short trip over to Monclova Tuesday night and cheer on your Maumee Valley Hawks

MV Girls 52 – MCA 30 – 1.20.11 – Two in a row

Game Summary

Kristin Bigelow scored a season high 28 points leading the Hawks to a 52-30 victory over the Monclova Christian Academy Thunder Thursday January 20, 2011. MV jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first and never looked back. Every player received significant playing time during the evening and six Hawks scored in the game.

First Quarter – MV 16 – MCA 2

Starting the game - Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Jazmine Aldridge-Brownlee (‘12), Genna Danes (‘12), Karla Luketic (‘11) and Kristin Bigelow (’12) – get well soon Wesley!

MCA played most of the game in a 2-3 zone, but started the game in man defense. MV played its base 2-3 zone.

The scoring started immediately for MV with a fast break basket by Delaney from Kristin. MV pressed the first part of the game. Delaney stole the ball on the first try, and returned the fast break-favor to Kristin for two. Jasmine scored the next two for MV off a rebound and the Hawks were off and running, 6-0.

Kristin scored her best basket of the evening at the 4:35 mark with a beautiful reverse layup. She would make three more two-pointers during the quarter to get her well on the way to a big scoring night – including this first quarter basket.

Jordan Baker entered the game with 3:52 to go in the quarter, and fit right in to the offensive flow. She also made an impact at the defensive end with a blocked shot that Kristin converted for two points.

Next up was Delaney who made this jumper with 1:52 left in the quarter.

Kristin would get to the hoop twice more in the quarter, but would be fouled. She made 2-4, and the frame ended with Maumee Valley ahead 16-2

Second Quarter – MV 15 – MCA 10

Starting the quarter – Yazmin AbdelKarim, Jordan, Genna, Cammie Lonsway, Kristin

MCA scored the first five points of the quarter, but MV quickly recovered. Kristin was fouled on a shooting attempt and made both ends. The Hawks got the ball back and Genna scored on this inbounds play.

Yazmin got into the scoring column with a three pointer to make it 23-7 MV.

At 3:04 remaining in the quarter, Anne Deichert came into the game and the Hawks kept rolling. Delaney made a layup, then after a Thunder three-ball, Genna scored two off an offensive rebound and Kristin scored off a pass from Anne. Another Delaney steal and pass to Kristin for two increased the Hawks lead to 31-12. Anne missed a three point try at the buzzer and the Hawks led by 19 at halftime.

Third quarter – MV 10 – MCA 7

Starting the quarter – Initial game starters

First up, two Kristin scoring videos:

Later in the quarter, Delaney scored on a give-and-go from Kristin on one of the best plays of the evening and MV was up 39-14.

Jordan and Yazmin returned to action during the quarter, and this next sequence ended with Jordan scoring two.

MCA scored the quarter’s final points and at the end of three it was MV 41 – MCA 19.

Fourth quarter – MCA 11 - MV 9

Starting the quarter – Yazmin, Cammie, Jordan, Genna and Kristin

The quarter started with another Kristin two pointer off the ‘Wisconsin’ play.

Another two second video highlight features a Jordan pass to Genna for two

With 5:20 to play, Emily Boyk entered the game and the entire roster had then seen action.

The final score of the evening came on a Jordan Baker two-pointer from the short corner and the game ended with the Hawks up 54-30.

Scoring

Kristin 28, Delaney 8, Genna 6, Jordan 5, Yazmin 3, Jasmine 2. In additin to Kristin, Jordan Baker turned in a season-high single-game scoring performance.

Notes

- Kristin’s 28 points ties her for the HS-wide single game high score this season, matching AJ King’s JV performance vs. TC in December

- The boys JV team supplied a raucous cheering section last night.

Next up

A more stout challenge faces the Hawks as they host the Toledo Christian Eagles Saturday at 1pm.

Monclova Christian Academy - the Sequel - Preview

Here's the initial MCA preview article.  Remember, they are defending state champs.

Since Maumee Valley defeated Monclova 50-39 December 7, 2010 in the season home opener, the Thunder has gone on a bit of a roll.  They are 4-2 in their games since MV, and their best victory was a 54-38 smackdown of 7-3 (2-0 in their league) Lima Temple Christian.

So beware the steadily improving Thunder, featuring Kenny N'Douba.

Finally, I understand that the teams will make every reasonable effort to play the game tonight.  See you there.

Chapter 2 - Welcome back fans; say hello to Robo-ball - MV 50 - Monclova Christian Academy 39 at Home - 12.7.10

Setting the Table

Gooooooooood Evening, and Welcome to the…VAAALLLEEYYYY!!!!!!!

Roger Spurgeon’s dulcet tones welcomed the Hawk faithful back to the Varsity Gym for the 2010-11 Home opener against the Monclova Christian Academy Thunder. The home faithful were treated to their first game in the newly painted Varsity Gym – bright white with a great lookin’ Hawk logo on the wall. The place has never looked better. Thanks again to the Boosters for a wonderful job. Thanks also to the roughly 50 students there tonight – mostly all High Schoolers.

In a greater sense though, we were treated to a glimpse of coaching strategy last evening. Coach Robinson collected win Number 494 last evening. A stretch in the second quarter illustrated how he’s gotten there.

Now in his third year at MV, Coach R and his staff have molded a group of players into his system. The primary objectives for the evening would be to stop Monclova forward Kenny N’Douba (No. 10), a 6’ 6” forward and one of the top five athletes the Hawks will face all year. If left to his game, Kenny would draw many fouls from the front line defenders. Secondarily, the Thunder’s shooting guard Zach Black (#20) would need attention during the evening.

Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Dixon Stoddard (’12) and Jonathan Krueger (’12)

Game Summary

The Hawks made a successful home debut tonight, muffling the Monclova Christian Academy Thunder 50-39. Team defense was the story of the evening as MV’s stifling man-to-man pressure grabbed 12 steals from the visitors.

Rick Deichert scored 17 for the home team, Jonathan Krueger hit for 14 and Dave Brown added 9 to lead the Hawks. Maumee Valley hit eight out of ten free throws on the evening. MCA forward Kenny N’Douba led all scorers with 26 points.

First Quarter – MV 14 – MCA 8

As per usual, the teams started out in their respective motion offenses looking for openings. MV struck first, Jonathan intercepting a pass near the sideline, finding Dave to start the break, and coming back to take a pass from Dave for the basket + foul on the shot. MV switched to a man press, which MCA solved fairly easily. The Thunder countered with a 2-3 zone.

MV found success against the zone with Rick hitting a three from the corner. Up-and-down court play was halted at the 5:08 mark with a technical foul against an MCA player, and Jonathan converted both shots. Rick came back with a floater in the lane and the Hawks were off to a lead after the first eight minutes.

Jared and Dixon shared defensive duties on N’Douba throughout the game, with Rick in his usual position opposite the Thunder’s shooting guard. Dave and Rick gave the Monclova guards fits, intercepting several passes and forcing misfires on passes into the interior.

Second Quarter – MV 12 – MCA 6

Starting the quarter, Dave, Rick, Dixon, Julius Turner and Jonathan

Both teams began the quarter in man defense. MV took advantage. Jon hit a two over his defender, Julius drove the baseline for another two and MCA called time at 5:29 with the score MV 22 – Thunder 10. Play continued back and forth until about the 3:30 mark.

At this point, MV was up by 12 with the ball. Jared, who had guarded Kenny N’Douba well had one foul. Monclova was hunkered down in its zone inside the three point arc.

And so we came to the Play of the Game – and welcome to this episode of Robo-ball (so named for Coach Robinson). For the next 1:20, the Hawks stayed outside at the top of the key; Rick and Dave simply passing the ball back and forth. And why not? With a 12 point lead and half time in sight, why risk getting either of your post defenders another foul against a tough opponent. It was all the benefits of a time-out with the clock running. Force the opponent to play you.

Even after the Thunder were pulled out of their defensive crouch, the Hawks put on a ball handling display and would not allow Monclova near the ball until MV took a shot at the 50 second mark. As Exhibit A, I present this picture of the MV guards during this stretch:

Dave and Rick to the Thunder: “No, you can’t have the ball back until we say so.”

Those in attendance were awarded 1:40 of continuing education credit in basketball coaching.

The teams traded baskets near the end of the half, Davey closing things out with a layup near the buzzer. Jared and Dixon ended the half with 1 foul each and the Hawks were in control. At intermission, it was MV 26 – MCA 14.

Third Quarter – MV 13 – MCA 8

Starting the quarter – Dave, Rick, Jared, Dixon, Jonathan

Monclova came out of the locker room determined to work the ball into its forwards, but with 8 fouls to give between Jared and Dixon, the Hawks defended aggressively and well. MV was working the high post offense with success; the highlight was another Jared pass to an unguarded Dave Brown for a 3. Monclova tried to keep up with the Hawks, but did not fare well in the running game. Near the end of the third quarter Rick came out of the game for the first time this season for Parker Bayer.

The visitors’ play of the game occurred late in the third, when N’Douba stole the ball at the top of the key and finished the breakaway with a highlight reel dunk. If cheering counted toward points, the Thunder would have pulled ahead at that moment.  Alas for our guests, no style points were awarded and the Hawks remained up by 17.

Three quarters, three times the opponent is held to under 10 points. As the teams rounded the three quarter pole, it was Hawks 39 – Thunder 22.

Fourth Quarter MCA 17 – MV 11

Starting the quarter - David, Parker, Julius, Jared, Dixon

MCA pressed much of the fourth quarter and forced a few turnovers, but for the most part the Hawks played even. Rick and David rotated in and out during the quarter with Parker and Nick Frasco.

There were two offensive highlights of the quarter. The first was a strong move by Jared who muscled his way into the block for a two pointer with 6:15 to play. Then with 2:11 left, Jonathan hustled to get his own rebound on the second of two free throws and scored a basket for a rare reverse three pointer.

At the 1:53 mark, Parker, Daniel Brandon and Omar Hazimah entered the game, and the Hawks coasted to victory.

Final Game Thoughts

Tonight the fans were treated to an opening season win and a chance to learn a little more about basketball. Fundamentals bear out; good defense and ball handling make a big difference.

In the event the Hawks are able to execute the hold strategy in later games, I’d encourage the student fan base to cheer wildly. When this happens, you are watching us in the process of winning.

Scoring

Rick had a regular-season career high 17 points, followed by Jonathan with 14 (maybe also a career high), Dave with 9, Jared 6, Julius and Dixon each with 2. Kenny N’Douba led all scorers with 26 points, and guard Zach Black had 5 on the evening.

A Special Hawkblog Welcome to..

Our worthy opponents Ottawa Hills and Toledo Christian who were scouting at the game last night. TC’s team members apparently were offered community service hours (just kidding) for coming to the game as it looked like they had a full bench at the Valley.

Next up

The Hawks are off until next week, when two games should both provide a playoff atmosphere. On Tuesday December 14, MV will host Toledo Christian, and then travel to Ottawa Hills Friday the 17th to visit the Green Bears. I have been told one of those games will be on BCSN, so let’s have a MV big turnout.

Hawks face Defending State Champs tomorrow

There's not much out there about our opponents tomorrow - The Monclova Christian Thunder.

Monclova plays as a Division IV independent.  They belong to the Ohio Christian School Athletic Association. The Thunder made it to the finals of the 09-10 OCSAA tournament, where they beat fellow TAAC member Emmanuel Christian 75-49.  Julius Turner played for EC last year.

The Thunder's best player is forward Kenny N'Douba.  Kenny is another Great Lakes AAU player, so he's well known to Rick, Jared, Jonathan and AJ.

Monclova's biggest loss to graduation was high scoring guard Jordan McCloud; he and N'Douba were a formidable 1-2 punch.

Monclova was defeated in its home opener last weekend by Emmanuel, 57-48.

Last year, Maumee Valley won both games against MCA, 53-42 at home, and 63-50 at the Thunderdome.
