Scoreapalooza is back!!!

At present, it's boys only, but both varsity and JV. If someone wants to get me the girls' stats, I'll be happy to add them in.

If you're playing both Varsity and JV, your stats are separate, and thus the V/JV by your name.

The usual suspects are at the top of the list.  Hi is season high.

And always remember Wins > Points.

EC can't handle the Trueth!!!

Mr. Foreman, may you have many future highlights in a Hawk Uniform.

MV 66 - EC 44 Insightful Internet Commentary

The following gems of wisdom are brought to you by Jeremy Anderson, Zain Bedi, Lucas Isaza.  Shockingly, Thad Woodard wormed his way into another video.  Special cameo appearance by Nick Towns.

MV 66 (at) EC 44 - 1.7.12 - Quick Summary

Maumee Valley knocked off one of the co-leaders in the TAAC this evening, rolling over the Emmanuel Christian Warriors 66-44 at the Roy Parmelee Gymnasium.  The game had the added bonus of making birthday boy Roger Spurgeon one happy quadragenarian.  The Warriors tried every defense in their book tonight against the Hawks:

  • the standard 2-3 zone
  • box and one against Rick
  • a half court trapping defense
  • straight man
  • a full court press
  • and a partridge in a pear tree

...none of them worked particularly well.

Julius Turner would have one of his best nights ever in the storied RPG, scoring 24.  This total included a stellar 10-11 from the line.  Jared Sturt and Rick Deichert also thrived against the defenseapalooza tonight, contributing 18 and 17 points respectively. Also scoring for the Hawks were Dave Brown with 4, Jon Krueger with 2 and Rashaan Preston with 1.

Speaking of defense, the Stopper of the Game award had to go to Jon Krueger, who held TAAC leading scorer Tyrese Edwards to eight points on the evening, thirteen points below his 20.9 ppg average.   Congratulations to Jon on this feat.

The JVs also won big, defeating their EC counterparts 48-22.  JV scoring - Marcus Knabbs 3, Solomon Collins 10, Rashaan Preston 7, Robbie Ariss 2, Kadar Jones 3, Rashad Woodley 2, Trueth Foreman 2, Nick Towns 2, Lucas Isaza 10 and Thad Woodard 7.

Lest the JVs get too carried away, let the record show they were 6-15 from the line this evening.  (The preceeding announcement was paid for and approved by Coach Clark).

Chapter 23 – Bear Clawed – Gibsonburg 46 – MV 43 – 12.9.11 at the Varsity Gym - Game Story

Setting the Table

It was a historic night at the Valley. After – years, the TAAC was welcoming a new member in its first league basketball game. The Gibsonburg Golden Bears were coming to town to meet up with Maumee Valley. And what a contest it would be, the teams picked to finish first and second in the league facing off in their first-ever matchup.

An indication of how big the game would be came early in the week when (to his credit) the Gibsonburg AD called Jim Fish and let him know that upwards of 600 Golden Bear fans can be expected to travel to big games such as these. And why not? Their gymnasium’s capacity is 1,400 (Yikes!).

After some quick thinking, Mr. Fish provided the visitors with their share of the Varsity Gymnasium’s 400 total seats. Come Friday night, the house would be packed, and the signs reading ‘SOLD OUT’ were posted on every entrance.

This pattern should continue for many of the other Hawks’ games. With high expectations, huge rivalries and a balanced TAAC projected for this year, sellouts may be the rule and not the exception.

Game Summary

In a game of streaks, Gibsonburg owned the last one, and overcame a four point deficit late in the game to win their TAAC opener in front of a sold-out Varsity Gym Friday December 9, 2011. The Bears jumped out to an early 9-1 lead, but the Hawks outscored the Bears 24-6 to go up 10. Gibsonburg clawed back to even in the third and the game was back and forth until the end. MV had a one point lead and the ball with under a minute, but the visitors prevailed in a wild finish.

First Quarter – Gibsonburg 12 – MV 11

Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Jonathan Krueger (’12) and Julius Turner (’12)

The game began shakily, with each team throwing a pass away. Logan Jones scored first, then Julius Turner split a pair of free throws. Gibsonburg went on a run from there with another Logan Jones jump shot, two free throws by Nate Yarborogh, and a three pointer from Gage Beaber

NO, ITS SPELLED B-E-A-B-E-R!!!

 – and it was a 9-1 lead for the Golden Bears. Gibsonburg’s staff had done their homework well and the Bears were clogging up the correct passing lanes.

The visitors had a chance to extend the lead further, but MV’s defense stiffened and Beaber was caught on a five second call. The Hawks worked the ball into Jared for two, then Rick came right back with a three and it was 9-6 Gibsonburg. The Home team was over the jitters.

Jon Kruger was called with his second foul at the 3:12 mark and was replaced by Dixon Stoddard. At the other end, Golden Bear wing Adam Clark fouled Jared Sturt for his second and was also removed from the game.

MV went to work. Great outside ball rotation opened a big gap for Julius Turner who knocked down a trey. The Golden Bears' Logan Jones countered with a nice turn-around jumper over Jared, for a 12-9 lead, but Jared rose uo on the next possession with a big shot block and this score at the other end:

The Hawks had comeback from an early eight point deficit to down only one at the end of the first.

Second Quarter MV 14 – Gibsonburg 7

On the floor for MV: Jared, Julius, Rick, Dave, Dixon

Maumee Valley started the quarter out in its hybrid 2-3 zone, and Nate Yarborogh took advantage with a three pointer. Dave Brown countered with a big-league driving scoop shot, and made a free throw for an old-fashioned three pointer.

The Hawks chose this moment to come out in their press and the next several minutes were a blur for the Golden Bears. Two straight Bear turnovers led to a foul on Yarborogh trying to stop Dave at the hoop – he converted both for the Hawks’ first lead, 16-15. Julius stole a Gibsonburg pass and took it to the hoop for two. Another steal, and Jon found Jared on a pick and roll play. After a Bear guard found himself trapped in the corner bringing the ball up, Coach Brent Liskai called time out for a breather.

The Hawks ramped up the physicality. Jared collected his own rebound twice before drawing a foul from Logan Jones – he went 1-2 and the press continued. Dave stole the ball and scored two points, then was fouled on the ensuing possession. Jared scored again and the home team now led by 10, 25-15.

Staying with the press, MV again stole the ball but missed; Julius stole the ball again and was fouled by Yarborogh. He missed the front end, and the Golden Bear’s finally found Logan Jones on an in-bounds play. MV committed a five second violation and Logan Jones made a last second shot to cut the half time lead down to 25-19 MV.

Third Quarter Gibsonburg 19 – MV 12

On the floor: Dave, Jon, Rick, Julius, Jared

Gibsonburg came out in a 2-1-2 zone against MV in the first possession. The Hawks misfired and da Bears continued their run with six straight points, knotting up the score at 25.

The contest now shifted to a Balboa vs. Creed slugfest. Jon Kruger scored for MV, Yarborogh came back for the Golden Bears. Rick was fouled at the basket by Logan Jones and made both. The Hawks pressed again; Rick stole the ball and got it to Julius at the foul line where he made a 15 footer. Gibsonburg returned the favor with two Dylan Dorfmeyer free throws and an old-school three pointer by Beaber. Jared was next, spinning in for two, then Dorfmeyer knocked down a three pointer for a two point Golden Bear lead.

The high pace continued as Jon fouled Jordan Kreglow on a break; he made both and the Hawks were down four. Dixon came right back for the home team with this two pointer:

And then it was Jared’s turn

The Hawks had tied the game at the end of three – 37-37.

Fourth Quarter Gibsonburg 9 – MV 6

On the floor: Rick, Dave, Jared, Jon, Dixon

Notwithstanding the short line-up, the Hawks continued their pressing ways. Rick stole the ball from Dorfmeyer and converted the lay up for two. The Hawks stole the ball again but couldn’t capitalize. Logan Jones did convert a basket however for the Gibsonburg tie.

Coach Robinson called time out at 6:32 to plan out the next two minutes. Dave Brown scored this two pointer out of the break:

After turnovers by both teams, MV ran the spread offense and scored two more for a 43-39 lead. It would be their last points of the game. The Hawks called another time out at the 4:00 mark. Jon committed an offensive foul, but Jared stole the ball back and was fouled shooting – and missed both ends.

Out of this came a long back and forth sequence ending with a foul on Yarborogh. The clock had wound down to 2:11 and the score was still 43-39. Gibsonburg got possession and Julius fouled Logan Jones, who made the front end only. A missed MV layup led to another foul at the other end – Jon Krueger’s 4th – and a 2/2 effort by the Golden Bears now cut the lead to 1, 43-42 with 1:47 to go. MV ran the clock down to 55.7, and this wild stretch ensued…

…putting Dorfmeyer at the line. He made both and Gibsonburg had regained the lead with 6.2 seconds to go. A bad entry pass cut the time down to 4.0 seconds. Rick’s desperation try was wide right and a last second foul brought Gibsonburg to the line for a final free throw. The Golden Bears held on for the 46-43 win.

What?? We had 'em all the way.

Final Game Thoughts

Gibsonburg is a great addition to the TAAC. They bring a talented group of players to this season’s action. They feature outside shooting and athletic forward play and will be a force this year.

That said, the Hawks missed a chance tonight for a big home win. Closing games like this will be ultra-important through the rest of the season, especially in the playoffs where the difference between teams narrows appreciably as the rounds progress.

And trotting out an ancient sports cliché, this loss may have been the best thing to happen to the Hawks. Gone is the pressure of an undefeated season. Gone is the assumption that the season will be a cakewalk and that the game is over by the end of the warm-ups. This team must now fight from behind to win the TAAC championship, and every game takes on importance.

Potpourri

Lots of cameras at the game…MV began a new ticket policy for this game and the MV seats were ‘sold out’ within 12 minutes from the beginning of the distribution…

Scoring

And now for the unhappy totals. Scoring for the Hawks: Jared Sturt 13, Dave Brown 9, Julius Turner 8, Rick Deichert 7, Dixon Stoddard 4 and Jon Krueger 2.

Next up

Round two of the three-game TAAC meat grinder is set for Tuesday (away) against the Toledo Christian Eagles, followed closely by a Friday contest back at home against the Green Bears of Ottawa Hills.

EC preview

Fast facts

Opponent: Emmanuel Christian
Enrollment (9-12): 128
Division/League: TAAC
Team Nickname: Warriors

From the Toledo Blade's TAAC preview:

Coach: Dave Regnier, 21st season
Last season: 9-12, 3-9
This season: 5-2, 3-0 TAAC

Top returning players: Seniors Tyrece Edwards, 6-1, F; Brett Forster, 6-0, F. Juniors Ryan Creech, 6-2, F; Josh Regnier, 5-5, G; Carlton Brown, 5-10, G; Bobby Behan, 5-8, G; Leland Snyder, 5-8, G.

Outlook: Coach Regnier has three starters back. Creech averaged 12 points and 9 rebounds per contest, while Edwards averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds per game. Josh Regnier had 5 points and 2.5 assists per contest.

Strengths should include some depth and solid guard play as well as good overall team quickness and shooting ability.

"This is a great group of guys to work with," Coach Reginier said. "We have good overall experience on this team."

But EC does not have a great deal of depth in the post and overall size could be a potential trouble area.

"I believe that we will be very competitive in the conference," Coach Regnier said. "We will need to stay healthy in our post positions and in other key areas. How our juniors step into roles that they have not had before will be a key to the season."

Game Notes: The Warriors are currently tied for first in the TAAC after being picked to finish 6th in the pre-season coaches poll...EC features the top two scorers in the league, the 1-2 punch of Tyrece Edwards and Ryan Creech...Creech currently leads the TAAC in rebounding...Emmanuel had a huge comeback win agains Cardinal Stritch, overcoming a 18 point deficit.

Rob Ariss' first varsity points

Congratulations to Mr. Ariss!!

Nick Towns' first varsity points

Chapter 22 – Press...Blur…and that’ll do it! – MV 74 – (at) Monclova Christian Academy 35 – 12.6.11 at the Thunderdome - Game Story

Setting the Table
It would be the second out-of conference game in a row for Maumee Valley, this time against the Monclova Christian Academy Thunder. The Thunderdome is a wonderful place to play and the home boosters are most hospitable.

The guests would not return these courtesies on the floor this night. Pressure defense early by Maumee Valley ensured that the three Gibsonburg coaches sent to scout the Hawks in advance of their big TAAC match-up would not see much of the MV offense this night.

Game Summary

It was a track meet with Maumee Valley bringing home the gold from the Monclova Christian Thunder, 74-36. MV ran an early press and was up 20 before the end of the first quarter. From that point forward, Coach Robinson stayed in the half court defense and played long stretches at a slow pace. The Hawk starters only played 1.5 quarters of the game on average. Every Hawk played at least five minutes tonight.

The JV's also rolled, beating their Thunder counterparts 55-12. Nick Towns led the JVs with 8, followed by Kedar Jones and Turner Booth with 7 each, Solomon Collins and Marcus Knabbs with 6 each, Jeremy Anderson and Osama Alkhalili with 4 each, Robbie Ariss with 3 and Lucas Isaza and Danny Hazimah with 2 apiece.

First Quarter – MV 24 – MCA 5

Starting five – Dave Brown (’13), Rick Deichert (’12), Jared Sturt (’12), Jonathan Krueger (’12) and Julius Turner (’12)

MV played man-to-man all evening, including the press. MCA worked a 2-3 zone.

The game opened slowly, with MV running its base offense. Jared scored the first points on two free throws and Dave Brown hit a scooper. MV played tough early half court defense, forcing this turnover.

Once warmed up, the Hawks started their press. From the Thunder’s point of view, things became a blur for a while. Rick scored first with a layup and MCA's coach called a time out at the 6:27 mark to see if he could guide his team through the coming storm.

He could not.

Over the next six minutes Maumee Valley would go on a 18-5 run, with scoring from Julius, Jared (now 4/4 from the line, Dave, Julius again (twice) – here’s the first time off a Rick Deichert steal..

...Dave again, Julius again with a free throw, Caleb Willhight…and it was 21-2 MV. With the Thunder barely able to get the ball across the half court line, Coach Robinson called off the press up by 19. Caleb would put the icing on the quarter with a three pointer near quarter’s end to finish things off for the Hawks.

The game was well in hand and many Hawks would see extended action this evening.

Second Quarter MV 13 – MCA 13

On the floor for MV: Nick Frasco, Caleb Willhight, Thad Woodard, Julius Turner and Jared Sturt

Thad was fouled shooting to start the quarter and split the free throw pair. MCA’s guard Trevor Hestor would come alive during the quarter and begin to hit jump shots on the right side of the key off high post screens – the Thunder’s most effective offense of the evening. The visitors answered with a Julius drive of his own, and MCA22 scored again. Jared was up next in the scoring column – and MCA22 hit another shot.

This back and forth ended when Caleb Willhight hit his second trey of the evening, then came back down the floor and was fouled near the basket. He would make both.

Rashaan Preston now entered the game with 3:10 remaining in the half. Maumee Valley’s scoring ended with a basket by Thad. It was 38-18 at half time.

Third Quarter MV 26 – MCA 10

On the floor – original starting five

The 16 point bulge for Maumee Valley actually did not reflect play. It could have been a lot worse, as the Hawksquad did not apply any pressure during the quarter. The main starters played about 2/3 of this quarter, and here are some video highlights:

First, here’s Dave Brown driving the basket on a break

Next up, the offense works the ball into Jared who converts – note the foul not called after the shot..

Rick Deichert gets into the flow – listen for the ‘money’ call in the video:

Rick finds Jared trailing on the break for this basket

Thad Woodard would replace Julius and score on this down-low iso play.

Jared basically had his way on the boards, illustrated by this putback for two.

Rick converted on this fast break

Jared would float through the MCA zone and score on this layup

And three MV starters teamed up for this rebound (Jon) fast break (Rick) and score (Dave)

Jared finished off the scoring in the quarter off of this inbounds play

And so went. At the end of three, it was MV 64 – MCA 28

Fourth Quarter MV 10 – MCA 6

On the floor: Nick, Caleb, Thad, Jared, Rashaan

Lots of play in the fourth with lots of players, and your Hawkblogger caught some history during the period.

First up, here are Nick Towns first career points in a varsity uniform:

Some other fourth quarter plays include this Nick Frasco jumper:

More history – Rob Ariss’ first varsity points:

A nice lead pass by Thad to Nick for a layup

A basket by Thad Woodard

And finally, a scene that’s probably played out at least 100 times for Coach Robinson – his team scoring late in the game as the young players work the base offense – here it’s Thad again.

Final Game Thoughts

A big night for the Hawks and a tough night for the hosts. Lots of empathy for MCA, the Hawks have been in their position many times in the past. Things will improve for the Thunder, as they are a very young team.

Scoring

Even though the starters only played about 12 minutes each, this was enough time for Jared Sturt to lead all scorers with 22 points. Julius Turner scored his uniform number tonight (11), and Caleb Willhight went double digits for the first time in his varsity career, downing 10 points. Also scoring for the Hawks were Dave Brown and Thad Woodard with 9 each, Rick Deichert with 7, Nick Frasco with 4, and Robbie Ariss and Nick Towns with their first varsity points - each with two on the evening.

Next up

The first round of the key three game stretch of TAAC heavyweights starts next week when the Gibsonburg Golden Bears.
