From the Editor - we are privileged to have a new addition to the Hawkblog staff. Parent Portia Ash (Solomon Collins class of ‘14) joins us and will be providing a summary of each JV game. Her story will be in Hawk blue, and I may add a few worthless comments at the end of a story from time to time.
Thank you Portia!! If last night’s game was any indication, you’ll have many happy stories ahead.
The MVCDS boys’ junior varsity basketball team had their season opener on Saturday, December 4th against the Fayette High School Eagles. The Hawks were victorious beating the Eagles 40-23 in what turned out to be a very well played game of team basketball.
The game got off to somewhat of a slow start as the teams felt each other out and concentrated on executing their offensive sets. The Hawks starting five included guards Atmore "AJ" King and Daniel "Danny" Hazimah, forwards Solomon Collins and Thaddeus "Thad" Woodward and center Israel "Izzy" Okkeke.
The first half ended with the Hawks up 13-8 on balanced scoring. In the second half the Hawks began to pull away from the Eagles behind the nearly flawless execution of key offensive sequences and all out hustle and heads up defense. Including a well designed and executed back door play with freshman Marcus Knabbs assisting Danny Hazimah in delivering a layup as the 3rd quarter came to an end with the Hawks up by 7, leading the Eagles 22 to 15.
In the fourth quarter the Hawks began to really pull away from the Eagles behind good shooting, with both AJ King and Thad Woodard hitting open 3 pointers and great defense that generated turnovers that the Hawks turned into several breakaway layups.
The Hawks played great team ball throughout the game and the team had balanced scoring. Izzy led the hawks in scoring with 10 points and Thad led the team in assists.
Scoring: Okkeke 10, Hazimah 9, King 6, Collins 5, Woodard 5, Ariss 2, Maaieh 2, Knabbs 1
