Northwood girls 52 – MV 34 – 1.13.11 at the Varsity Gym

Northwood used a full rotation of two fivesomes and hot outside shooting to defeat the Hawks 52-34 at the Varsity Gym.

Starting the game - Delaney Lonsway (‘12), Jazmine Aldridge-Brownlee (‘12), Genna Danes (‘12), Wesley Flaum (‘12) and Kristin Bigelow (’12)

Jasmine started the game off for the Hawks with a two pointer at the 6:30 mark. Most of the first quarter was played at a slow pace by both teams. Kristin scored the first of her 19 points on a well executed fast break, but the Rangers scored the last four points of the quarter to take the lead 9-4. Jordan Baker saw action late in the first and continued into the second quarter as a starter.

Northwood pressed most of the game, and in the second quarter, MV had on-and-off success against the pressure. With 6:31 remaining, Wesley hit a two from the left wing, but the visitors came right back with a basket. Delaney scored next on a beautiful fast break. But the night would belong to the guests, who made three three-pointers in a row to pull away in the first half. The half ended with Northwood ahead 25-16.

Scoring - Kristin 19, Genna 4, Wesley 4, Karla 3, Jasmine 2, Delaney 2

Your Hawkblog did manage to capture some rare first half video of the Hawks in half court offense.

Northwood continued to press in the second half, and most of the hosts’ opportunities came on fast break points. Genna scored on a coast-to-coast drive at the 7:06 mark. The Rangers’ hot shooting continued during the third quarter and would extend their lead to 36-23 at the end of the third quarter. Yazmin AbdelKarim, Karla Luketic and Cammie Lonsway would play a substantial portion of the second half.

With two full fivesomes rotating in regularly, Northwood’s depth would take its toll on the Hawks in the fourth quarter. Kristin was hampered at game’s end with leg cramps but would stay for the entire game. MV stayed within 11 points for the first half of the quarter on good half court offense highlighted by a pick and roll to Genna for two at 6:53, but eventually the press wore the Hawks down and Northwood prevailed 52-34.
